Brent Crude Surges Past $90 on Fresh Strait of Hormuz Tensions

LONDON, ENGLAND — Brent crude oil prices surged above $90 a barrel on Monday, as fresh geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz fueled global energy supply concerns. The benchmark jumped more than 2% during early trading, reaching levels not seen in months, after Iran threatened military action in the strategic waterway.

The price spike comes amid escalating rhetoric between Tehran and Washington, following President Trump’s recent declaration that the strait would soon become U.S. territory. Iran has responded forcefully, vowing to defend its interests in the narrow passage through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply flows.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most critical chokepoints for global energy shipments, connecting Middle Eastern oil producers with key markets in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Any disruption to shipping traffic through the strait could have catastrophic consequences for global oil supplies and prices.

Market analysts warned that the $90 threshold could be just the beginning if the situation continues to escalate. “The market is pricing in a significant risk premium,” said a commodities analyst. “If we see any actual disruption to shipping or military confrontation, we could see prices moving toward $100 very quickly.”

The surge in crude prices has also raised concerns about the impact on global inflation and economic recovery. Higher oil prices translate directly into increased fuel costs for consumers and businesses, adding to inflationary pressures that central banks have been struggling to contain. For oil-importing countries, the price spike could further strain already stretched budgets.

The White House has reportedly convened emergency meetings to assess the situation and explore options for calming the markets, including the potential release of additional strategic petroleum reserves. However, U.S. officials have also signaled their determination to maintain pressure on Iran, suggesting that the current tensions may not be resolved quickly.

As the geopolitical situation remains fluid, oil markets are bracing for heightened volatility in the coming days. The crisis has once again highlighted the fragility of global energy supply chains and the outsized influence of geopolitical events on commodity markets.
