Sevilla to be honoured for 3 Europa League wins in a row
The European football governing body – UEFA – will reward Sevilla for winning the Europa League trophy three years in a row.
If Sevilla had pulled off the same feat under the previous UEFA format of the competition, they would have been allowed to keep the trophy for good.
The Europa League was then known as the UEFA Cup.
Sevilla has, on May 18, in Basel, Switzerland, came from behind to beat Liverpool 3-1 in Basel.
“We were able to score three goals against a great team …
“That has doubled our budget and titles,” Sevilla president Jose Castro said on Friday.”
“This team has no limits.”
The Andalusian side trailed 1-0 at half-time at the St. Jakob Park stadium.
They, however, made an impressive second-half comeback with one goal from striker Kevin Gameiro and two from club captain Coke.
UEFA have yet to say what the special mark of recognition – enshrined in the Europa League statutes – will be.
UEFA awarded La Liga winners Barcelona a badge of honour now displayed on their shirts for winning a fifth European title in 2015.
Sevilla can end the season with another title when they take on Barcelona at Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon stadium on Sunday in the Copa del Rey final.
“We have a magnificent squad, coaches and a fantastic club,” Castro said. “Now we must remain on this path to achieve our second title.”
The final of the Copa del Rey is getting close and the objective, the double, is at the forefront of the minds of the FC Barcelona squad, no doubt.
After claiming a 24th league title, Luis Enrique’s team want to round off the campaign with another trophy to add to the European Super Cup, Club World Cup and league already secured.
The squad returned to training on Friday to put the finishing touches to their preparations for the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla in the Vicente Calderón on Sunday at 9.30pm CET.
All Luis Enrique’s available players were in action at the Tito Vilanova pitch at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.
Their final session before the final will take place on Saturday at 11.00am CET.
