Share this:

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commenced a protest in Lagos organised in solidarity with the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

NLC said that the protest rally was organised “to get our children back to school”.

It is currently being held in several states of the federation.

Labour members, other unions, as well as civil society groups were seen gathered under a bridge axis in Ikeja, Lagos from where the rally began.

Security operatives, including Police and others are at the venue to prevent breach or attack on the protesters by thugs.

Recall that ASUU had shut all public universities and commenced the ongoing strike on February 14, after the Federal Government reportedly reneged on its agreement with the educational body.

NLC is demanding, amongst other things:

  • release of revitalisation funds for universities,
  • renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement,
  • release of earned allowances for university lecturers,
  • deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers, etc.

Abuja NLC rally will hold tomorrow Wednesday, July 27 at 8 AM. Taking off point, NLC said, is the state secretariat.
