Pelosi: Man who attempted to kidnap ex-Speaker jailed 30-years

Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley has sentenced David DePape, the man who attempted to kidnap former Speaker of the United States, Nancy Pelosi, to 30 years in prison.

DePape, it could be recalled, had confessed to attempting to kidnap Pelosi at her home in San Francisco on October 28, 2022.

He admitted during trial testimony that he broke into the Pelosis’ home with the intention of kidnapping Nancy.

According to reports, he would have broken her kneecaps with the hammer if she lied to him.

His bizarre plot included wearing a unicorn costume while interrogating Nancy Pelosi and posting the video online.

DePape, 44, ended up attacking the husband, Paul Pelosi, Paul Pelosi, who was 82 at the time with the hammer.

During the attack, Paul Pelosi managed to call 911, and police arrived promptly.

The attack, which lasted until the police showed up, was captured on police body camera video.

What are DePape’s charges?

DePape still faces multiple state charges, including attempted murder of Pelosi and assault with a deadly weapon.

Other charges include elder abuse, burglary, false imprisonment, and threatening the life of a public official.

DePape further claimed that his plan was to end what he viewed as corruption by government officials.

Jurors had found him guilty in November 2024, for attempting to kidnap a federal official and assaulting the family.

Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison term on DePape but the judge ‘magnanimously’ handed him 30 years.

He was given 20 years for one count and 30 years for another count, both of which sentences will run concurrently.

His lawyer had requested a 14-year sentence, highlighting that he was experiencing a challenging period in his life.

The lawyer also pointed out that had no previous criminal record, which plea Judge Corley acknowledged while sentencing DePape.

She said, however, that she could not ignore the fact that he, unprecedentedly, broke into the home of Pelosi, a public official.

“He actually went to the home, that is completely, completely unprecedented,” the judge said.
