Six times EPL title was decided on final day

The race for the Premier League title between Arsenal and Manchester City will be going down to the last game of the season on Sunday.

Arsenal are two points behind City and will be hoping for a stroke of luck as City face West Ham at the Etihad.

Here are six other occasions the league has gone to the last game of the season:

2012 – Two Manchester sides

This has been widely regarded as the most dramatic end to a premier league season.

Two Manchesters sides going for the title with both teams on 89 points and Manchester City having a +8 advantage on goal difference.

City needed a win to lift their first league title in 44 years but the blues went down 2-1 to Stoke City at half time. in the final ten minutes of the game City went on to stage one of the most iconic comebacks in English football with Argentine striker Kun Aguero scoring in the final minute of the game to give City the title.

2014 – Manchester City

Ten years ago, Man City went into the final day top of the table but Liverpool still had the chance to catch them.

Liverpool had already suffered defeats against Chelsea and Crystal Palace; they also went on to lose on the final day to Newcastle but the result was meaningless in the end.

With City making light work of West Ham, Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany scored either side of half-time to give them a 2-0 win.

1998/99 Season – Manchester United

Manchester United’s historic treble-winning season in 1998/99 culminated in a thrilling last-day triumph in the Premier League.

Locked in a tight title race with Arsenal, United faced Tottenham Hotspur on the final day needing a win to secure the title.

In a dramatic finale, United overturned a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1, with David Beckham’s iconic injury-time corner setting up Teddy Sheringham’s equalizer before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer netted the winner moments later.

2015/16 – Leicester City

Leicester City completed one of the greatest underdog stories in football history with a remarkable last-day triumph in the 2015/16 season.

Needing a win against Everton to secure the title, Leicester produced a fearless display, winning 3-1 to cap off their fairy-tale journey from relegation candidates to Premier League champions.

2004/05 – Chelsea

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea announced themselves as a dominant force in English football with their first Premier League title in the 2004/05 season. Needing just a point to secure the title on the final day, Chelsea faced a tough test against Bolton Wanderers.

Despite falling behind early, Chelsea rallied to secure a 2-0 victory, clinching the title in style and laying the foundation for years of success to come.

2021/22 – Manchester City

Manchester City clinched their fifth Premier League title in the 2021/22 season with a dramatic last-day triumph.

Neck and neck with Liverpool heading into the final match, City faced Aston Villa needing a win to secure the title.

In a tense encounter, City were down 2-0 with 20 minutes to go but eventually triumphed courtesy of an Iikay Gundogan brace.
