Abuja, Nigeria – March 21, 2025- Senator Seriake Dickson fiercely opposed President Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration in Rivers State during yesterday’s Senate session.

The controversial move, suspending elected officials, sparked nationwide debates on constitutional integrity and democratic governance.

Asserting his stance, Dickson declared, “I raised objections in closed session, stressing this proclamation violates constitutional norms.”

The Bayelsa West Senator reiterated his duty to defend Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing, “As a Democrat, I’m sworn to uphold our Constitution.”

Constitutional Crisis Looms

Despite vigorous objections, Senate discussions remained behind closed doors.

Dickson lamented the lack of open debate, stating, “Minorities deserve their say, even if majorities prevail.”

Meanwhile, Senator Tambuwal allied with Dickson, condemning the suspension of Rivers’ officials as unconstitutional.

However, a majority backed the emergency decree, prompting the Senator and allies to exit the session in protest.

Highlighting constitutional flaws, Dickson argued, “Oversight mechanisms don’t fix foundational breaches.” Consequently, he shifted focus to the judiciary, stating, “The courts must now scrutinize this overreach.”

Leadership Clash Goes Public

Tensions escalated when Senate President Akpabio confronted Dickson pre-session. A viral video captured their clash, with Dickson accusing Akpabio of “censoring free speech and distorting my position.” Reflecting on the exchange, Dickson remarked, “I remained calm despite intimidation tactics,” praising his restraint amid pressure.
