Foods HIV patients should take regularly to maintain strong immune system

(DDM) — The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) weakens the body’s natural defense system, making it harder to fight off infections that could become life-threatening.

In advanced cases, high viral loads can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition that leaves the immune system severely compromised.

For individuals living with HIV or AIDS, maintaining good health is an ongoing challenge.

A weakened immune system means the body is less able to combat illnesses, making diet and nutrition an essential part of overall care.

Health experts stress that those living with HIV must follow strict dietary guidelines to help strengthen their immune systems and support recovery.

This includes eating foods that provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to fight inflammation and improve overall health.

Regular consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is strongly advised. These are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which play a key role in boosting immunity and protecting cells from damage.

Dark leafy greens, citrus fruits, and colorful vegetables like carrots and bell peppers are especially beneficial.

Protein is another crucial part of the HIV diet. Lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts help repair tissues and maintain muscle mass, which is often lost due to the virus or related illnesses.

Omega-3-rich foods such as salmon, sardines, and flaxseeds also reduce inflammation and support heart health.

Whole grains like brown rice, oats, and whole wheat bread provide sustained energy and important B vitamins, while dairy or fortified alternatives supply calcium and vitamin D for strong bones, which can weaken due to HIV or its treatments.

Adequate hydration is equally vital. Drinking enough clean water helps flush out toxins, supports digestion, and aids in the transport of nutrients throughout the body.

Limiting sugary drinks and alcohol is also recommended, as these can weaken immunity and interfere with medications.

Some patients are tempted to rely on herbal remedies or supplements, but medical professionals caution that these should only be taken under a doctor’s guidance, as certain herbs can interact negatively with antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Ultimately, living well with HIV is not just about taking medication, it also involves a consistent commitment to healthy eating, regular medical check-ups, and mental wellness.

As experts note, the right nutrition can significantly improve quality of life, slow disease progression, and help individuals remain strong and active for many years.
