BREAKING: COPDEM raises alarm as insecurity forces residents to flee Ifelodun

(DDM) – Rising insecurity in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has triggered panic as residents begin to abandon their homes for safety.

DDM gathered that the situation was made public through COPDEM’s national media platform, which released a statement amplifying concerns raised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to the message, families have begun relocating from Ifelodun following repeated threats from armed criminals and worsening unrest in the community.

The ADC State Publicity Secretary, Ibraheem Alfa Abdulrasheed Gbagba, described the situation as unacceptable and warned that it could escalate into a humanitarian disaster if not urgently addressed.

“Ifelodun people are leaving their homes. The government must not fold its arms while insecurity displaces innocent residents,” Gbagba declared.

COPDEM, while publishing the statement, urged Kwara youths to embrace community self-defense strategies as government efforts have failed to secure lives and properties.

The group insisted that citizens cannot remain helpless while criminals push communities into despair.

“They have failed us. Communities must defend themselves until the government wakes up to its responsibilities,” COPDEM noted.

Security analysts argue that the growing crisis in Kwara reflects a disturbing trend across North-Central Nigeria, where banditry and kidnappings have become frequent.

Ifelodun, historically regarded as one of the more peaceful areas in Kwara, is now experiencing unprecedented levels of insecurity.

Residents say night movements have reduced drastically, markets are shrinking, and farmlands are being abandoned.

Farmers, the backbone of the local economy, fear venturing to their fields due to threats of attacks, raising concerns over food security in the state.

Civil society groups have urged the state government to strengthen security presence, deploy intelligence teams, and adopt community policing to rebuild public confidence.

Observers note that Kwara, often overshadowed in national security discourse, may soon join the list of volatile states if urgent measures are not taken.

ADC emphasized that no community should feel abandoned, stressing that the government has both a constitutional and moral duty to protect its people.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has been urged to act swiftly, with calls mounting for immediate and visible action to restore peace.

Local residents interviewed by reporters expressed deep frustration, accusing authorities of ignoring repeated complaints despite clear evidence of growing insecurity.

They warned that silence from government officials would only embolden criminal elements further, making the crisis more difficult to contain.

As of now, Ifelodun residents continue to flee, leaving behind homes, farms, and businesses in search of safety.

COPDEM’s decision to amplify the ADC’s alarm serves as a warning that insecurity in Kwara is no longer a local problem but a national concern.
