Kaduna police probe El-Rufai political meeting that turned violent

(DDM) – The Kaduna State Police Command has announced a full-scale investigation into a violent political meeting allegedly linked to former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the incident, which erupted in chaos with sporadic gunshots, occurred during a gathering reportedly convened under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Coalition.

Police confirm gunfire, chaos, and political tension

According to the State Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, the organisers failed to notify security agencies before holding the meeting, despite repeated warnings.

He explained that preliminary findings revealed the presence of political gangsters and thugs allegedly loyal to the former governor, who were involved in the shooting that disrupted public peace.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the gathering led to a clash, during which thugs and political gangsters attached to the former governor allegedly fired gunshots, causing chaos and disruption of public order and peace in the state,” Hassan stated.

ADC leadership distances itself from gathering

The police have since approached the ADC leadership for clarification.

According to Hassan, party officials denied any knowledge of the controversial meeting and publicly distanced themselves from the organisers’ claims.

“The ADC leadership reaffirmed their commitment to the rule of law and stated categorically that they were not involved in any meeting linked to the former governor,” he added.

Warning issued to organisers and venues

Hassan emphasised that no individual, regardless of political influence, would be spared if found culpable.

“The investigation is ongoing, and anyone found culpable, irrespective of his personality or status, will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

The police spokesperson further warned hotels, event centres, and similar facilities that they would be held liable if they hosted political gatherings without notifying security agencies beforehand.

Ban on unauthorised political meetings

The Kaduna State Police Command has temporarily suspended all unauthorised political gatherings until proper security measures are put in place.

The directive is aimed at preventing further breaches of public peace and ensuring that political meetings comply with legal and security protocols.

Political implications

This development has added a new twist to Kaduna’s political climate, with observers suggesting it could affect El-Rufai’s influence ahead of future political engagements.

El-Rufai, who left office in May 2023 after serving two terms as governor, remains a controversial figure in the state’s political landscape.

While his allies claim he is being targeted for political reasons, his critics argue that incidents like this reflect the need for stricter enforcement of political conduct and law and order.

APC reacts sharply

In a related development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) criticised El-Rufai, accusing him of “pointing one finger at others with four pointing back.”

The party’s remark appeared to reference his recent comments about political leadership in the state, suggesting that his own actions have contributed to rising tensions.

Ongoing probe

DDM gathered that the police investigation will seek to establish the organisers of the meeting, the source of the gunfire, and the level of involvement of individuals linked to the former governor.

Security agencies are also expected to review surveillance footage and witness accounts to identify all those responsible for the violent disruption.

The Kaduna police have assured residents that updates on the probe will be made public as soon as findings are confirmed.
