The leader of Igbo Youths in Diaspora Chukwuemeziem Ekete has reacted to the recent Tax law passed by the legislature and signed by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement made available to Diaspora Digital Media, Ekete bemoaned the alterations made to the law that was passed by the legislature.
“This tax law has a problem, a significant problem that would impoverish and make life harder for Nigerians. You can’t rightly give tax collectors the authority to harass and arrest citizens, its a colonial concept”, the statement partly reads.
Ekete frowned at the way the tax law was announced, and the illegality of announcing a different thing from the one the legislature passed.
“The question is simple, why allow the legislature to deliberate and pass a law, only to announce a different package. Of course, if the legislatures saw that tax collectors would be given authority to harass and arrest citizens, they wouldn’t pass such law.
“Unfortunately, we are in a country where impunity is the order of the day. The presidency must retract and understand the people have the will to oppose illegality”.
Ekete further said that President Tinubu is aligning with France, and seems to be following everything France is today.
“This system of tax is practiced in Francophone countries, where France subject citizens to harassment just to Mill from them. The presidency must understand that Nigeria is different and embracing France can be dangerous.
“Nigerian must rise up and reject this move, harassment of citizens by tax collectors will worsen the situation of citizens who have or enjoy nothing from the government.
“This tax law announced by the presidency was not what was passed by the legislature and it’s within the moral right of Nigerians to disagree, Ekete declared.
