Sanusi, Bayero, Kwankwaso Hold Separate Eid Prayers In Kano

(DDM) — The city of Kano witnessed a rare and symbolic division during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, as key figures held separate prayer sessions across different locations.

The parallel prayers were led by Muhammadu Sanusi II, Aminu Ado Bayero, and former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, reflecting deepening political and traditional divisions within the state.

Residents across Kano observed the unusual development as worshippers aligned with different camps gathered at separate venues to mark the end of the Ramadan fast.

The situation underscores the lingering emirate tussle in Kano, which has remained unresolved despite legal and political interventions over time.

Sanusi and Bayero have continued to command loyalty from different factions within the traditional institution, creating parallel structures that have influenced social and religious activities in the state.

Kwankwaso’s involvement further highlights the political dimension of the division, given his strong influence in Kano politics and his alignment with certain traditional interests.

Observers say the conduct of separate Eid prayers is not merely a religious occurrence but a reflection of broader power struggles shaping the state’s leadership landscape.

The division has raised concerns among stakeholders who fear that prolonged rivalry could weaken the unity traditionally associated with Kano’s cultural and religious institutions.

Community leaders have, in the past, called for reconciliation among the key actors, stressing the need to preserve the dignity and cohesion of the emirate system.

Despite the tensions, the Eid celebrations were largely peaceful, with security agencies maintaining presence across major prayer grounds to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

Analysts warn that if unresolved, the underlying disputes could continue to manifest during major public events, reinforcing divisions among residents.

The development serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between tradition and politics in northern Nigeria, where leadership structures often carry both cultural and political significance.

As Kano navigates this period of division, many residents hope that dialogue and compromise will eventually restore unity within one of Nigeria’s most influential traditional institutions.
