2027: Support For Tinubu Ignites Fresh Rumbles In PDP

(DDM) – The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party has deepened as disagreements over support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continue to fuel tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As reconciliation efforts intensify ahead of the party’s scheduled National Convention on Sunday, divisions within the PDP have once again come to the surface.

The faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has publicly declared that the party will not support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The group insisted that aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would undermine the identity and independence of the opposition party.

Party insiders say the disagreement over Tinubu’s second-term ambition has become one of the most contentious issues driving internal divisions within the PDP.

The dispute has contributed to the emergence of rival camps, each with differing strategies on how the party should position itself ahead of the next election cycle.

Some members believe strategic alliances could strengthen the party’s chances, while others argue that outright opposition is necessary to rebuild credibility.

The Turaki-led faction maintains that the PDP must remain a strong opposition force rather than supporting the incumbent president.

They argue that endorsing Tinubu would weaken the party’s electoral competitiveness and alienate its support base.

The disagreement has further complicated ongoing reconciliation efforts aimed at unifying the party before its national convention.

Observers say the PDP’s internal struggle reflects broader challenges facing opposition parties in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Political analysts note that leadership disputes and ideological differences have historically contributed to fragmentation within the party.

The PDP, once Nigeria’s dominant political force, has faced repeated internal crises since losing power at the federal level in 2015.

Efforts to rebuild unity have often been disrupted by disagreements over zoning, leadership structure, and electoral strategy.

Some stakeholders warn that continued division could weaken the party’s ability to challenge the ruling APC in future elections.

Others argue that open debate within the party is necessary to define a clear political direction.

The upcoming National Convention is expected to play a crucial role in determining the PDP’s leadership structure and strategic outlook.

Party members are calling for compromise to avoid further fragmentation ahead of the 2027 elections.

The debate over support for President Tinubu remains a central issue shaping the party’s internal dynamics.

As discussions continue, the PDP faces mounting pressure to resolve its differences and present a unified front to the electorate.
