Tragedy struck in Ebonyi State as suspected gunmen killed the traditional ruler of Ishinkwo community in Onicha Local Government Area, Eze Josephat Ikegwu.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers struck on Tuesday night, shooting the monarch through the window of his bedroom while he was at home with his wife.

Sources in the community said the incident happened around 10 p.m., when the gunmen reportedly arrived at his residence and opened fire from outside the building.

Although the exact motive is still unclear, early indications suggest the killing may be linked to an internal dispute within the community.

Authorities, however, are yet to confirm this.

The Chairman of Onicha Local Government Area, Ikechukwu Ogbuofia, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate.

“Yes, I have heard about it. It is very sad. I was told they shot him through the window in his room,” he said.

The Ebonyi State Police Command also confirmed the killing and said an investigation is already underway.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, stated that efforts have begun to track down those responsible.

“We have received the report, and the police have launched an investigation to arrest and prosecute those involved,” he said.

The incident comes barely a month after another traditional ruler in the state, Francis Igwe, died after being kidnapped in Ikwo Local Government Area.

Igwe was reportedly abducted on his way to church and later died from injuries sustained while in captivity. His body was later recovered and deposited in a mortuary.

Police had earlier arrested nine suspects in connection with that case.

The latest killing has raised fresh concerns about the safety of traditional rulers and the growing insecurity in parts of the state.
