Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has welcomed plans to establish a $145 million solar manufacturing plant in the state, describing the investment as a significant step towards industrial growth, job creation and economic development.
The project, promoted by MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited in partnership with Chinese technical partners, is expected to be sited at Umuelele in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
Speaking on Thursday while receiving the investors, led by Dr Oko Jaja, at the Government House in Umuahia, Otti said he was encouraged that the company had reached its final investment decision.
He assured the delegation that the state government would continue to provide the support needed to ensure the project takes off successfully, noting that the required land had already been made available.
“I am glad you have reached the final investment decision. Investments like this are exactly what we encourage because they create opportunities for businesses to grow and improve the economy. We have done everything necessary to make the land available, and if there is any other support you require, feel free to let us know,” the governor said.
Otti stressed that beyond the financial value of the investment, its impact on employment and economic expansion was what mattered most to the state.
“It is not just about the money being invested. It is about the jobs that will be created, the increase in economic output and the prosperity the project will bring. Those are the benefits we value most,” he added.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment and protecting investors willing to do business in Abia.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Dr Oko Jaja, said the visit was to update the governor on the progress made towards establishing the solar manufacturing plant.
He disclosed that the project, being executed with Chinese technical partners, would attract an investment of about $145 million and commended the Abia State Government for providing a conducive environment for investors.
Jaja also revealed that the first tranche of funding for the project is expected to be released in September 2026.
The Chief Executive Officer of MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited, Dennis Nwakanma, said the plant would be developed under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement with the Abia State Government.
According to him, the visit by the Chinese partners formed part of the preliminary assessment of the proposed site before construction begins.
Nwakanma expressed confidence that the factory would commence operations before the end of September, describing it as a major milestone for renewable energy production and industrial development in the state.
He added that, in addition to manufacturing solar panels and related accessories, the facility would provide employment opportunities for young people through skills acquisition and capacity-building programmes.
