Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez for a reported fee of £7.5 million, in a late move that could significantly change the goalkeeping situation at Stamford Bridge.
The agreement was reported on Thursday after Chelsea moved quickly to secure the experienced goalkeeper. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have agreed terms for a permanent transfer, while Martínez has already given the green light to the move.
The deal comes at a time when Chelsea are looking for greater stability between the posts. Robert Sánchez has faced criticism following his performance in Chelsea’s Premier League victory over Fulham, where mistakes from the Spanish goalkeeper contributed to the pressure on the Blues’ defence.
Chelsea’s decision to pursue Martínez therefore represents an attempt to bring experience and proven quality into a position that has generated plenty of debate at the club.
Martínez, 33, is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the Premier League and has established himself as an important figure for both Aston Villa and Argentina.
His biggest achievement came with Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he played a crucial role in the country’s triumph in Qatar. His penalty shootout heroics against France in the final became one of the defining moments of his international career.
The goalkeeper has also won the Yashin Trophy twice, recognition of his status as one of the best goalkeepers in world football.
Martínez joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020 after finally establishing himself as a first choice goalkeeper during his final season in north London. His move to Villa Park transformed his career, with the Argentine quickly becoming one of the club’s most important players.
During his time at Villa, Martínez made more than 200 Premier League appearances and became known for his commanding presence, penalty saving ability and confidence under pressure. He also helped Villa secure European football and played an important role in the club’s Europa League success last season.
However, his position at Villa changed this summer following the arrival of Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma.
Villa signed Suzuki for close to £30 million as their new long term No. 1, leaving Martínez facing increased uncertainty over his future. The Argentine had already been training separately from the first team and was left out of Villa’s squad for their opening Premier League match against Brighton.
Martínez had also attracted interest from Juventus earlier in the transfer window, but that potential move failed to materialise after the Italian club opted to sign Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario instead.
Chelsea subsequently emerged as a serious destination, particularly after Sánchez came under renewed scrutiny.
The timing of the deal is therefore significant. Chelsea have already been active in the transfer market and are looking to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours under manager Xabi Alonso.
Martínez’s arrival would provide the manager with a goalkeeper who has extensive Premier League experience and has already demonstrated his ability to perform on the biggest international stage.

The move could also have implications for Sánchez’s future. Chelsea had initially continued with the Spaniard as their first-choice goalkeeper, but the opportunity to sign a player of Martínez’s experience for a relatively modest fee has presented the club with an opportunity they were unwilling to ignore.
For Aston Villa, meanwhile, the transfer represents another major change to Unai Emery’s squad.
Villa have already experienced significant movement during the summer, with Morgan Rogers joining Chelsea and other important players leaving the club. The arrival of Suzuki had already signalled that the club was preparing for life without Martínez.
The £7.5 million agreement now appears set to bring the Argentine’s five-year spell at Villa Park to an end.
Although the transfer still requires the completion of the necessary formalities, the agreement represents a major late-window move for Chelsea.
Martínez’s experience, personality and record at the highest level could make him an important addition to Alonso’s squad. Chelsea will hope the Argentine can provide the reliability they have been searching for while also bringing the mentality of a World Cup-winning goalkeeper to Stamford Bridge.
For Martínez, the move offers another opportunity to compete at the highest level of English football and begin a new chapter after a remarkable spell with Aston Villa.
