LAGOS, NIGERIA — Nigerian passport holders can now apply for electronic visas to travel to 54 countries and territories, according to a new global passport evaluation released by travel platform eVisas.io, expanding the options available to travellers seeking to bypass traditional embassy appointments.
The destinations offering eVisa access to Nigerians include the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Singapore, Qatar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Rwanda, and Thailand. An eVisa allows travellers to apply for and obtain a visa electronically instead of going through the conventional paper-based process, which typically requires an in-person appointment at an embassy or consulate .
The evaluation also found that Nigerians can travel to 26 destinations without a visa, while five countries offer visas on arrival. For the remaining 125 countries, a traditional visa application is required before departure .
The 54 destinations listed as offering eVisas to Nigerians span Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. In Africa, they include South Africa, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, among others. In Asia and the Middle East, destinations include the UAE, Qatar, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Iran, and Kazakhstan. Other destinations include Antigua and Barbuda, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago .
Requirements Vary by Country
While the eVisa system simplifies the application process, requirements, processing times, fees, and permitted lengths of stay vary significantly from one country to another. Some destinations, such as South Korea, require applicants to submit physical documents at a Visa Application Centre even after completing the online portion of the application. Singapore operates a referral-based system where applications must be submitted through a Singapore citizen, permanent resident, or licensed visa agent. Thailand requires Nigerian applicants to provide a police character certificate and a report from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency as part of the eligibility assessment .
Passport Ranking Context
The eVisa access comes as Nigeria ranked 90th globally in the July 2026 Henley Passport Index, with a visa-free score of 44 destinations. The ranking covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations using data from the International Air Transport Association. Nigeria shared the 90th position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Turkmenistan, each providing visa-free access to 44 destinations .
The Henley Passport Index measures passport strength based on the number of destinations holders can enter without securing a visa beforehand. The 44 destinations accessible to Nigerians include those available through visa-free entry, visa on arrival, and electronic visa arrangements .
Practical Implications for Travellers
For Nigerian travellers, the expansion of eVisa access represents a significant reduction in the logistical burden of international travel. The traditional visa application process often involves long queues, extensive paperwork, and the anxiety of in-person interviews. The shift to electronic systems allows applicants to complete most or all stages of the process online, saving time and reducing the need for travel to embassies in Abuja or Lagos .
However, travel experts advise applicants to verify current requirements through official immigration platforms before applying, as visa rules, supporting documents, and eligibility conditions can change without notice. An online application does not guarantee automatic approval, and travellers must satisfy the destination country’s immigration requirements before departure .
