WhatsApp is set to increase its minimum software requirement for iPhones from November 30, 2026, which could affect users of some older Apple devices.
The messaging platform will require iPhones to run iOS 15.5 or later, up from the current minimum requirement of iOS 15.1.
However, affected users may not need to buy new phones, as the devices can still run compatible versions of iOS 15. Users can install the latest software update available for their devices to continue using WhatsApp.
The five affected iPhone models are:
1. iPhone 6s
The iPhone 6s is among the older devices affected by the new requirement. Owners should check for available software updates before the November 30 deadline.
2. iPhone 6s Plus
The larger iPhone 6s Plus is also affected. Users who have not installed the latest compatible software may lose access to WhatsApp after the new requirement takes effect.
3. iPhone SE (1st generation)
Apple’s first-generation iPhone SE is also on the list. The device supports iOS 15, so users can update it to the latest compatible version instead of replacing the phone.
4. iPhone 7
The iPhone 7 is another model affected by the change. Owners should check their software-update settings and install the latest compatible iOS version.
5. iPhone 7 Plus
The iPhone 7 Plus completes the list of affected models. Like the iPhone 7, it can run a compatible version of iOS 15, meaning users should be able to maintain WhatsApp access by updating the device.
WhatsApp users with any of the five models are advised to check their iPhone’s software version and install the latest available update before November 30.
