Manchester City survived a difficult Carabao Cup encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion, coming from behind twice to secure a 4-3 penalty shootout victory after a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

The holders looked vulnerable against an energetic Brighton side that repeatedly exposed gaps in their defence, but goals from Mateo Kovacic and Vitor Reis ensured Pep Guardiola’s men remained in the competition.

City eventually booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, who saved Brighton’s final two penalties to settle the contest in favour of the hosts.

Brighton started brightly and took the lead in the 30th minute through Malick Yalcouye, who finished from close range after Georginio Rutter delivered a dangerous low cross into the penalty area.

The visitors had threatened before the breakthrough, forcing City to defend carefully as they searched for a way through the home side’s reshuffled defence.

City responded by increasing the tempo of their attacks, with Rayan Cherki helping to create openings as Brighton struggled to contain the hosts’ movement around the penalty area.

Their pressure eventually paid off in the 40th minute when Kovacic restored parity with a superb low strike from outside the box. The Croatian midfielder received the ball after good hold-up play from Floyd Samba and Phil Foden’s pullback, before firing through a crowded area and seeing his effort squeeze inside the post.

The equaliser lifted the atmosphere at the Etihad, and City continued to push for a second goal before the interval. Marc Guehi came close with a header that drifted narrowly wide, while another City attempt was blocked as Brighton worked desperately to prevent the hosts from taking the lead.

However, Brighton struck again almost immediately after the restart.

In the 47th minute, Rutter restored the visitors’ advantage by turning in a low delivery from Jaouen Hadjam. The French forward found space inside the penalty area and finished from close range, leaving City with another deficit to overcome.

Rutter threatened again later in the second half, producing a long-range effort that forced Rulli into an important intervention. The shot also came close to troubling the goal frame, underlining Brighton’s growing confidence as they searched for a third goal.

City responded with renewed urgency, introducing fresh attacking options in an attempt to break through Brighton’s defensive structure.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 72nd minute when Brazilian defender Vitor Reis scored his first goal for Manchester City. The youngster got the decisive touch on Cherki’s low free-kick, redirecting the delivery into the net to make it 2-2.

The equaliser gave City fresh hope, but Brighton continued to threaten on the counterattack rather than retreating completely into their defensive shell.

City pushed for a winner during the closing stages, with Foden and Cherki helping to create opportunities around the penalty area. However, Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele and his defenders held firm as the contest moved towards its conclusion.

Brighton nearly snatched victory in stoppage time when substitute Mats Wieffer struck the woodwork with a close-range effort. The chance represented a major escape for City, who could easily have been eliminated had the ball crossed the line.

The hosts also came close to finding a late winner through an attack involving Foden, but neither team managed to produce the decisive finish before the final whistle.

With the score level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the tie went directly to a penalty shootout.

City initially appeared comfortable from the spot, with Phil Foden, Enzo Fernandez and Jeremy Doku converting their attempts. Brighton responded through Pascal Gross, Matthew O’Riley and Max De Cuyper to keep the shootout level.

The momentum briefly shifted towards Brighton when Steele saved Kovacic’s penalty, giving the visitors an opportunity to take control.

However, Rulli produced a crucial response by diving to save Yasin Ayari’s effort. Cherki subsequently converted City’s fifth penalty, putting the pressure back on Brighton.

Rulli then became the decisive figure once again, saving Lewis Dunk’s attempt to secure a 4-3 shootout victory for Manchester City.

The result sent the holders into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Bradford City.

Although City progressed, their performance highlighted defensive weaknesses that Guardiola will want to address, particularly after allowing Brighton to take the lead twice.

Brighton, meanwhile, can take encouragement from their performance despite the disappointment of elimination. They created dangerous opportunities, struck the woodwork late in the match and pushed the defending champions to the limit.

Ultimately, City’s resilience and Rulli’s penalty-saving heroics proved decisive, keeping their hopes of retaining the Carabao Cup alive.
