Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following the legendary forward’s decision to retire from international football, revealing that he had personally asked the former captain to continue representing the national team.
Ronaldo, 41, announced his retirement on Thursday, November 5, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year international career that established him as Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most influential figures in the history of the game.
Reacting to the announcement, Jesus admitted that he wanted the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to remain part of his plans but acknowledged that the decision to end his international journey ultimately belonged to the player.
Speaking to Portuguese television channel Canal 11, the former Al-Nassr manager disclosed that he had encouraged Ronaldo to continue playing for Portugal because of the experience, leadership and influence he brings to the dressing room.
“I asked him to continue with me because I needed him by my side,” Jesus said, expressing his desire to retain the veteran forward’s presence in the national team.
However, the Portuguese coach insisted that he respected Ronaldo’s decision, recognising that the legendary striker had earned the right to determine how and when he wanted to end his international career.
“I have to accept his decision,” he added.
Jesus’ comments carry particular significance given the recent uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo’s relationship with the national team following reports of disagreements over his playing time.
The tension reportedly intensified after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s victory over Norway, having previously been informed that he would feature in the encounter.
The situation attracted considerable attention, with questions emerging about the forward’s position under Jesus and whether his influence within the team was beginning to change.
Ronaldo subsequently left the national team camp, with the incident contributing to speculation about his international future.
Despite the circumstances, Jesus’ latest remarks suggest that he still values the former captain’s contribution and would have preferred to continue working with him.
The coach also highlighted the importance of Ronaldo’s legacy, particularly his influence on younger footballers who have grown up watching him represent Portugal at the highest level.
As a further demonstration of his admiration, Jesus revealed that he had instructed officials to place a large photograph of Ronaldo in the auditorium of the Portuguese Football Federation.
The photograph, according to the coach, is intended to serve as a lasting source of inspiration for players and other members of the national team’s setup who use the federation’s facilities.
Ronaldo’s retirement brings to a close one of the most successful international careers in football history.
Since making his senior debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003, the forward has made 234 appearances for Portugal, scoring 146 goals to become the highest goalscorer in men’s international football.
His greatest achievement came in 2016 when he captained Portugal to their first-ever European Championship title after defeating France 1-0 in the final.
Despite suffering an injury that forced him off during the first half, Ronaldo continued encouraging his teammates from the touchline as Portugal secured a historic victory in extra time.
He subsequently led the country to two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025, further cementing his status as one of Portugal’s greatest sporting figures.
His international journey also included six FIFA World Cup appearances, making him the first male footballer to score at six different editions of the tournament.
Although his departure leaves a significant leadership gap in the Portuguese squad, his influence on the national team is expected to remain long after his retirement.
The Portuguese Football Federation has also promised to organise a special farewell ceremony to celebrate his achievements and give supporters an opportunity to honour the former captain.
For Jesus, Ronaldo’s departure represents the loss of an experienced leader whose contribution extends beyond his performances on the pitch.
While Portugal must now prepare for a future without their iconic number seven, the coach’s tribute reflects the enormous impact of a player who helped transform the country’s footballing history.
