NAFDAC Busts Fake Wine Factories In Aba, Shuts Down Counterfeit Markets

In a recent operation, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered and dismantled counterfeit wine factories operating in the bustling Cemetery Market in Aba, Abia State. The decisive action was announced by Mr. Martins Iluyomade, the Director of the Southeast Zone of NAFDAC.

Iluyomade disclosed that the market has been temporarily closed to facilitate a thorough sanitization process. The move comes in the wake of a significant discovery during a raid on Monday, exposing the extensive circulation of counterfeit products, particularly fake wines and other beverages within the market.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Iluyomade stated, “Operatives of NAFDAC have arrested 10 criminals over the production of fake adulterated beverages.” The arrests underscore the agency’s commitment to curbing the production and distribution of substandard and potentially harmful products.

Furthermore, Mr. Martins Iluyomade shed light on the nefarious activities of these illicit manufacturers. Not only were they producing imitation wines and drinks, but they were also found guilty of adulterating high-quality products from reputable companies. Iluyomade explained the alarming method employed by these criminals, involving the incorporation of harmful chemicals and colorings into the beverages.

Expressing concern for public safety, Iluyomade cautioned that consumers, particularly during the festive yuletide period, may have unwittingly purchased these adulterated drinks without knowledge of their origin. This revelation underscores the need for vigilance and scrutiny when acquiring beverages, especially during peak consumption periods.

A viral video associated with the operation captures members of the NAFDAC task force in action, destroying numerous bottles of counterfeit soft drinks. The video serves as a visual testament to the agency’s dedication to eradicating fake and potentially hazardous products from the market.
