Shettima slams Ganduje over call to abandon 2027 presidential ambitions

The National President of the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima Shettima, has strongly criticized Abdullahi Ganduje’s recent remarks.
Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urged northern politicians to step aside from the 2027 presidential race.
He insisted that President Bola Tinubu would complete two terms in office without opposition from the North.
Shettima rejected this stance, accusing Ganduje of trying to suppress political competition and limit democratic participation.
Speaking in an interview with Diaspora digital media (DDM), Shettima described Ganduje’s statement as undemocratic and harmful to Nigeria’s democracy.
He argued that in a true democracy, every citizen has the right to contest for political office.
“Ganduje’s call for northern politicians to abandon their aspirations in favor of Tinubu’s second term is deeply troubling,” Shettima said.
He stated that the call undermines democracy and the constitutional right of Nigerians to seek political office.
Shettima warned that discouraging candidates from contesting could restrict voters’ choices and stifle political competition.
He emphasized that democracy thrives on inclusivity and the free participation of all individuals in the electoral process.
Shettima accused Ganduje of attempting to consolidate power within a specific political faction rather than promoting an open election.
He cautioned that such an approach could set a dangerous precedent for Nigerian politics.
“In a diverse country like Nigeria, every region must have an equal opportunity to present candidates,” Shettima stated.
He argued that voters deserve a broad spectrum of choices to elect leaders based on merit and vision.
Shettima pointed out that the 2027 election is still years away, making Ganduje’s statement unnecessary.
He insisted that the democratic space should remain open for free political contestation.
“Elections are about the people,” Shettima stressed.
He maintained that no individual or group should impose candidates on the electorate.
He reiterated that political competition is essential for Nigeria’s democratic growth.
He emphasized that democracy flourishes with open contestation and constructive debate.
Shettima urged political leaders to uphold democratic principles enshrined in the constitution.
He warned against actions that could undermine the democratic process or suppress opposition.
“As citizens, we must defend the right of all individuals to participate in elections without fear,” Shettima declared.
He concluded that Nigeria’s democracy depends on protecting political rights and ensuring free elections.
Shettima’s remarks highlight the need for inclusive democratic practices in Nigeria.
His stance reinforces the importance of allowing all political actors to compete freely.
