Trump wants Congress to end the changing of clocks and keep the country on daylight saving time

President Donald Trump on Friday, April 11, 2025, urged Congress to “push hard for more Daylight at the end of a day.”

His comment comes in his latest dig at the semiannual changing of clocks.

According to online media sources, Trump, in a post on his Truth Social media network, said:

it would be “Very popular and, most importantly, no more changing of the clocks, a big inconvenience and, for our government, A VERY COSTLY EVENT!!!”

The Republican president’s position calling for more daylight would push the schedule forward, keeping the country on daylight saving time.

His post came a day after a Senate panel heard testimony examining whether to set one time all year instead of shifting.

There has been growing interest in states to standardize daylight saving time in recent years.

But daylight saving time, when clocks are set from spring to fall one hour ahead of standard time, is still recognized in most parts of the country.

It was first adopted as a wartime measure in 1942.

Trump last year called for the Republican Party to eliminate daylight saving time, saying it was “inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation.”

But he backed off that call last month, with another post on social media calling it a “50-50 issue.”

The president said some people would like more light later in the day.

However, according to him, some want more light early so they don’t have to take their kids to school in the dark.

“When something’s a 50-50 issue, it’s hard to get excited about it,” he said.

The Senate in 2022 unanimously approved a measure that would make daylight saving time permanent across the United States, but it did not advance.

President Donald Trump has occasionally voiced his opposition to the practice of Daylight Saving Time (DST) and even called for an end to it.

The main reason he, along with some others, advocates for stopping the clock changes is due to the perceived disruption to people’s lives.

Here’s why:
  • Health and Well-being:

Trump has mentioned that the clock changes, which occur twice a year, can be disruptive to people’s sleep patterns. This he said could lead to negative effects on health, including sleep deprivation, stress, and reduced productivity.

  • Economic Impact:

There’s an argument that the shifting of clocks isn’t as beneficial economically as it once was, especially with modern technology and lighting reducing the need for extended daylight hours.

Critics say that the economic benefits of DST (like saving energy) are now minimal.

  • Public Support:

Many people find the biannual clock changes annoying or unnecessary, and surveys have shown that a significant portion of the American public would prefer to keep time the same year-round.

Trump has tapped into this sentiment, aligning with those who feel the switch is a hassle.

  • Consistency:

By eliminating the time change, people could have a consistent schedule throughout the year, which could benefit both individuals and businesses by reducing confusion.

It’s worth noting that Trump wasn’t the only one to voice this opinion.

Daylight Saving Time has been a topic of debate for many years, and various state legislators and other public figures have also pushed for its abolishment or year-round standard time.
