Wike and Tinubu

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly declared his readiness to lead President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in the 2027 general elections.

This bold declaration came during a media interaction in Abuja on Monday, where Wike confidently reiterated his loyalty and political commitment to President Tinubu’s second-term bid.

Speaking to journalists, Wike addressed the rising speculation about his role in the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections, suggesting he would once again be at the forefront of the campaign.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a controversial figure in recent Nigerian politics, appeared unapologetically firm in his political stance as he brushed off any pretence about his allegiance.

Responding to a direct question about whether he would spearhead Tinubu’s campaign, Wike replied:

“I have told you this before, is it because I am in Asiwaju’s presidency?”

He continued, “Are you not aware I will lead his campaign in Rivers State? You want me to say no?”

Wike, who played a controversial but significant role in Tinubu’s 2023 victory, especially through his influence in the South-South, noted that Tinubu did poorly in the FCT during the last election.

“Are you not aware that he didn’t get up to 10 per cent here, FCT? But he will win here. Are you not aware?” he emphasized.

“Stop asking me questions you know. Of course, you know. Is that hidden?” he added defiantly.

He reminded reporters that his political principle has always been that the presidency must rotate to the South, a stance he upheld even when it led to tensions within his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike’s statement is seen as both a declaration of intent and a warning to political opponents who may underestimate his influence in the coming electoral cycle.

In the lead-up to the 2023 elections, Wike, then a PDP stalwart, broke ranks with his party after a bitter primary election loss and began cozying up to Tinubu, who eventually appointed him to his cabinet despite party differences.

Observers have described Wike’s political journey as unpredictable but shrewd, often shaped by regional loyalty and personal influence rather than strict party alignment.

In Rivers State, where Wike remains a dominant political force, his support could once again prove decisive for the APC, especially in challenging opposition strongholds.

The FCT Minister also hinted at his determination to overturn Tinubu’s electoral loss in Abuja, a region where opposition parties had a strong showing in 2023.

By publicly aligning himself with Tinubu this early, Wike may be attempting to solidify his relevance in the APC and shape the political landscape well ahead of 2027.

Political analysts believe Wike’s statement may signal deeper political realignments within the APC and could also serve as a rallying point for other Southern leaders who believe in power rotation.

As the 2027 elections slowly begin to take shape, Wike’s role could stir both momentum and controversy within national and regional politics.

Whether his involvement will boost Tinubu’s appeal in critical regions like Rivers State and Abuja remains to be seen, but his declaration has already sparked wide political conversation.

More importantly, it reaffirms Wike’s consistent positioning as a major player in Nigeria’s high-stakes political chessboard.
