Trump says Iran and US making nuclear deal progress

The United States President Donald Trump on Monday, June 2, 2025, flatly rejected allowing Iran to enrich uranium under any new nuclear agreement with Washington.

Trump made this declaration via his Truth Social page amid ongoing nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States.

His firm statement followed a report by Axios claiming the US proposal might allow limited uranium enrichment by Iran.

Trump wrote in all caps, “WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM,” making his red line unmistakably clear.

This comes amid five rounds of talks between both nations since April to replace the 2015 deal Trump scrapped in 2018.

Negotiations remain deadlocked, with no finalized agreement, as both sides hold vastly opposing positions on uranium enrichment.

Axios reported Saturday’s US proposal would allow low-level enrichment on Iranian soil for a period yet to be determined.

Trump blasted former President Joe Biden, accusing him of allowing Iran’s program to advance unchecked.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi defended the country’s program as peaceful and warned against Western interference.

“If the goal is to deprive Iran of peaceful activities, no deal will be reached,” Araghchi stated in Cairo.

He made the comments after meeting Rafael Grossi, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief, in the Egyptian capital.

Grossi urged Iran to show more transparency following a leaked IAEA report that showed heightened enrichment activity.

The report also revealed that Iran has been enriching uranium up to 60 percent, edging closer to weapons-grade 90 percent levels.

Grossi emphasized, “Only full explanations will restore confidence in Iran’s intentions.”

Iran rejected the report and accused European countries of exploiting it to push for renewed sanctions.

Araghchi warned the IAEA not to become a tool for escalation or be misused by hostile governments.

He reiterated that the US must first lift sanctions choking Iran’s economy before any agreement is reached.

Iran claimed it received “elements” of Washington’s latest proposal after mediation by Oman.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the US had not guaranteed sanctions would be lifted.

“The Americans are vague on removing sanctions,” Baqaei stated at a Tehran news conference.

US nuclear envoy Steve Witkoff echoed Trump’s stance, calling uranium enrichment in Iran a “red line.”

“No enrichment ever again in Iran. That’s non-negotiable,” Witkoff told Breitbart News last month.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi praised the US-Iran talks and pushed for de-escalation to avoid regional war.

Egypt’s foreign minister also warned that military conflict would plunge the region into uncontrollable chaos.

Despite warnings and failed talks, Iran has vowed to continue enrichment “with or without US deal.”

US media reported the latest proposal includes halting all enrichment and creating a regional nuclear energy group.

The White House has called the plan “acceptable” and in Tehran’s “best interest” to accept immediately.
