Venezuelan President says only Putin and Xi can end the Israel-Iran conflict

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, expressed his belief that the only world leaders capable of halting the growing conflict between Israel and Iran are Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The confrontation, which erupted following an assault on Israel on the night of June 13, has rapidly intensified and raised fears of broader regional instability.

Speaking during his weekly television program Con Maduro+, the Venezuelan leader emphasized that global stability now hinges on the intervention of strong, balanced leadership.

“I believe that only strong, dignified leaders who are committed to maintaining global equilibrium, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, are capable of resolving the current crisis, brokering a ceasefire, facilitating the start of diplomatic negotiations, and ultimately achieving peace,” Maduro declared.

His remarks come amid rising international concern about the potential for the Israel-Iran conflict to spiral out of control.

Countries and international organizations have issued calls for de-escalation,

On the other hand, Maduro underscored his faith in the geopolitical influence and diplomatic weight of both Moscow and Beijing to bring about a meaningful resolution.

Maduro also weighed in on Iran’s right to defend itself, stating that the country is justified in taking defensive action in the face of continued aggression.

He suggested that Iran could take significant steps if provoked further, including potentially closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

“Iran, as a sovereign nation, has every right to defend itself.

“If Israel persists in bombing a noble and peaceful people like the Iranians, then Iran, in the name of self-defense, has the authority to implement whatever strategy is necessary to protect its rights and its population,” Maduro stated.

His comments align with Tehran’s own position, which frames its actions as a legitimate response to Israeli attacks.

Since the outbreak of hostilities on June 13, Iran and Israel have exchanged deadly strikes, targeting military sites, infrastructure, and in some cases, civilian areas.

The international community has warned of the potential for a much larger regional war if the violence continues unchecked.

Maduro’s appeal to Putin and Xi reflects a growing belief among some world leaders.

The belief is that Western powers, particularly the United States, may not be in the best position to mediate the crisis due to perceived bias or a history of involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts.

In contrast, both Russia and China have maintained strong diplomatic and economic ties with Iran.

Also, to a lesser extent, have worked with Israel on trade and technology matters.

The Venezuelan president praised both Russia and China for their perceived roles as stabilizing forces on the world stage.

He described them as champions of a multipolar global order and defenders of sovereignty and peace.

He criticized what he characterized as the failure of Western leadership to offer viable solutions to the world’s most pressing crises, including the Israeli-Iranian conflict.

As tension between Israel and Iran continues to mount, Maduro’s call for global diplomatic intervention, specifically by Russia and China, adds another voice to the chorus urging de-escalation.

Neither Moscow nor Beijing has publicly announced any new mediation efforts related to this conflict.

On the other hand, both nations have previously supported diplomatic solutions to Middle Eastern tensions through United Nations frameworks and bilateral negotiations.

In summary, Maduro’s public endorsement of Putin and Xi as potential peace brokers underscores his broader geopolitical stance and his vision of a more balanced world order.

At the same time, his firm defense of Iran’s right to protect its interests and territory highlights the shifting alliances and narratives shaping current international relations.

As violence continues to claim lives and disrupt stability in the region, many are watching to see whether the leaders of Russia and China will step forward to mediate a path toward peace.
