The Nigeria Football Federation [NFF] has appointed former Super Eagles’ defender and skipper, Joseph Yobo as the assistant coach of the national team.

Yobo replaces Imama Amapakabo.

2027: CARDINAL ONAIYEKAN DRAGS SOLUDO, TINUBU, INEC OVER FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS Catholic Cardinal John Onaiyekan has raised concerns over the state of Nigeria’s political space ahead of the 2027 general elections, speaking on the need for elections to be conducted freely, fairly and transparently. Speaking in Enugu, Cardinal Onaiyekan said it is not the responsibility of Governor Chukwuma Soludo or other governors to tell citizens who to vote for, stressing that every governor has only one vote like every other eligible voter. He also questioned the quality of elections Nigeria has conducted so far, saying, in his words, that the elections “have not been serious.” According to him, conducting credible elections should not be treated as an impossible task, insisting that elections are “not rocket science” and can be conducted freely and fairly. Cardinal Onaiyekan also referred to the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), noting that its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, had said he would “surprise us.” The Catholic cleric further revealed that when bishops visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, they raised concerns about what he described as a shaking political space and the threat to free and fair elections. His comments come as political parties, candidates, civil society groups and voters begin to focus increasingly on the 2027 elections, with questions surrounding electoral credibility, the independence and performance of INEC, the role of political leaders and governors, and the protection of voters’ choices remaining major issues in Nigeria’s political conversation.
