Adamawa Government says it plans to plant  1 million seedlings in 2017 as part of the effort to control desert encroachment.

Mr Joel Midala, Director of Forestry, Ministry of Environment made the disclosure in an interview with Newsmen, on Thursday in Yola.

Midala described the level of deforestation in the state as worrisome to government, saying that measures must be taken to arrest the situation.

He attributed rapid deforestation in the state to “competition between farmers acquiring more farm lands and activities of firewood and timber dealers” among other major problems.

“ If immediate and proper actions are not taken in two years to come, Adamawa will face serious desertification due to indiscriminate felling of trees across the state.

“ Currently, the state has lost almost two-third of its forest vegetation which is now becoming inhabitable to both humans and animals.” Midala said.

He also noted that due to the indiscriminate deforestation, some rivers, ponds and Fadama areas where water used to be throughout the year were found drying up soon after the rainy season.
