Anyiin is the hometown of the previous governor of the state, Mr. Gabriel Suswam.

The community leader of Anyiin, Mr. Joseph Anawah revealed that the suspected bandits, who numbered more than 20, were well-armed.

Mr. Anawah added that the operation they conducted took three hours to complete.

He said, “Terrorists yesterday, Wednesday, October 30, 2024, unleashed terror on Anyiin town, Logo LGA of Benue State, in an operation that started around 6:32 pm, leaving over 15 people dead, some with injuries, and others missing.”

The community leader said that the son of the kindred head of Mbawuave, Zaki Mbatern, and Orihundu Ati, a retired primary school supervisor, were among those slain in the horrific assault.

He also mentioned the son of Mr. Uyange Chembe, the younger brother of the late district head of Ukemberagya, Zaki John Chembe, and Tordoo Suswam, the former chief of staff to the former chairman of the Logo local government.

According to Mr. Anawah, a former advisor to Mr. Gabriel Suswam, the state’s former governor, the sheer volume of invaders overpowered the town’s security personnel.

He disclosed that the attack on Wednesday was the second in October.

Nibo gunmen attack: Survivors recount their experience

Survivors of the claimed rival cult attack that led to the October 20, 2024, murders described their horrifying experiences.

The survivors attributed their survival to divine intervention.

Wadada, the security director and commander of the community’s vigilante group, expressed regret at the violent turn of he annual festival, which is a treasured custom for Nibo residents.

He recounted: “The attackers entered Nibo through Amawbia during our Ọnwa Asaa festival, marking our new yam celebration.

“They arrived in two vehicles, a Lexus Jeep and a Sienna, both without license plates.

“Passing through police checkpoints and the Governor’s Lodge, they opened fire on a group of people in a shop.

“One of my vigilante men, Mr. Uchenna Obiekwe, an only son who was unmarried, was killed”, he stated.

Several others were injured, including the business owner and his six-year-old daughter, who were shot in the legs, Wadada said.

He stated he did not know if the perpetrators were cultists, unidentified gunmen, or armed robbers.

He said: “It was by God’s grace I left the scene before they arrived,” as he reflected on his tight escape.

Anambra State Ministry of Information employee Ichie Oku, another survivor of the Nibo attack, talked about his near-death experience.

He said: “You should thank God for sparing my life.

“I was at a joint on Sunday when they arrived.

“One of them pointed a gun at me, but another gang member told him I wasn’t their target.

“Despite this, he still pulled the trigger, but his colleague pushed him at that moment, causing the bullets to hit the wall behind me.”

In excruciating pain, Oku recounted how three people were killed close to him.

When the criminals returned a few minutes later, they shot five more people.

This was before they reportedly killed four more persons, bringing the total number of fatalities to twelve, before moving to Eke Nibo.

“It all happened in less than five minutes.

“If not for God, I would have been the 13th victim,” he said.

Two family members had passed away, and he was going to bury them the next day.

The impact of the Monday sit-at-home order was heightened by the unusual silence that followed the Nibo attack in the normally bustling city of Awka.

According to reports, no business activity was taking place.
