A Nigerian Army soldier has been arrested for allegedly attacking a female food vendor in Benue State.

The soldier, identified as Private Christopher Emmanuel, was accused of assaulting the woman over a N2,000 debt.

The incident occurred in Kula, a community in Gwer West Local Government Area, on May 6, 2025.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) confirmed that the matter was officially reported two days later, on May 8.

Eyewitnesses said the victim, known as Doshima, approached the soldier to demand payment for food sold earlier.

Her demand reportedly angered the soldier, leading to an argument that quickly spiraled out of control.

The soldier allegedly claimed that the woman insulted him during a telephone conversation about the unpaid debt.

Angered by the confrontation, Private Emmanuel reportedly launched a physical attack on the defenseless woman.

Local residents described the attack as violent and humiliating for the victim, who suffered visible bruises.

The community expressed outrage over the incident, calling for immediate justice and military accountability.

Responding swiftly, the Nigerian Army confirmed that Private Emmanuel has been taken into custody.

A statement by the Headquarters of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) described the incident as deeply unfortunate.

The military acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and promised a thorough investigation into the allegations.

Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Abdullahi Lawal Osabo, issued the official statement on Saturday.

He assured the public and the victim that justice would be pursued without compromise or delay.

The Army emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for human rights violations and indiscipline among its personnel.

Authorities confirmed that a full investigation has already commenced to establish the facts of the case.

The military vowed to enforce appropriate disciplinary measures if the soldier is found guilty of misconduct.

Citizens were urged to report misconduct through the Army’s Human Rights Desk, not just on social media.

Officials stressed that every report made through official channels would be thoroughly addressed.

The Army reiterated its commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and maintaining professionalism in all operations.

Local residents praised the Army’s swift response but demanded transparency throughout the investigation process.

They also called for increased protection for civilians, especially in remote communities vulnerable to abuse.

Human rights activists have condemned the assault and demanded that the soldier face justice under the law.

They warned against any attempt to cover up the incident or shield the perpetrator.

Legal experts stated that, if proven, the attack constitutes a criminal offense with serious consequences.

They advised the victim to pursue justice through both military and civil legal systems.

The victim, Doshima, is said to be recovering from injuries sustained during the violent encounter.

Family sources revealed that she is traumatized and currently receiving emotional and medical support.

They urged authorities to guarantee her safety throughout the investigation and possible court proceedings.

Civil society organizations have promised to monitor the case and ensure justice is not denied.

They also demanded reforms to improve accountability within Nigeria’s security agencies.

Many Nigerians see this case as a test of the Army’s willingness to punish errant personnel.

They argue that holding soldiers accountable will help restore public trust in the military institution.

The military’s immediate detention of the suspect has been widely seen as a positive initial step.

However, groups insist that real justice will only be served through transparent disciplinary action.

The incident has again sparked national discussion on the conduct of soldiers deployed for civil duties.

Critics say the military must strike a balance between security enforcement and respect for human rights.

They warn that unchecked abuse by soldiers could lead to further public resentment and distrust.

The outcome of this case could set a new standard for internal accountability in the Army.

As investigations continue, many await with hope that justice will be delivered without fear or favor.
