Barnsley Retain Nigerian Midfielder Kelechi Nwakali Ahead of New Season

English League One club Barnsley FC have confirmed that Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali will remain at the club for the 2026/2027 season despite months of uncertainty surrounding his future at Oakwell.

The decision marks a significant turning point for the former Golden Eaglets captain, whose relationship with the club appeared to have deteriorated during the latter stages of the recently concluded season. Reports earlier in the year suggested that Nwakali had been frozen out of the first team following disciplinary issues and disagreements with members of the coaching staff.

Many observers expected the Nigerian international to leave Barnsley during the summer transfer window after spending a prolonged period away from senior team activities. However, the club has now opted to retain the midfielder as preparations begin for another League One campaign.

The development comes as positive news for supporters of the talented Nigerian player, who has continued to attract attention because of his technical ability, creativity and leadership qualities despite experiencing an inconsistent professional career in Europe.

Nwakali joined Barnsley in 2024 after signing a long term deal with the English club following previous spells in Spain and Portugal. At the time of his arrival, the midfielder was viewed as one of the experienced additions capable of strengthening Barnsley’s ambition of securing promotion to the English Championship.

During his first months at the club, Nwakali showed glimpses of the qualities that once made him one of Africa’s most highly rated young footballers. His composure on the ball, vision in midfield and passing range earned praise from fans and football analysts alike.

However, his progress at Barnsley later suffered a major setback after reports emerged of tensions between the player and the coaching staff. The situation eventually led to his exclusion from first team activities, with the midfielder reportedly training separately from the senior squad for part of the season.

Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane had previously hinted that Nwakali might not feature again for the club after disciplinary concerns reportedly affected his standing within the squad. The manager also suggested that the midfielder struggled to adapt fully to the intense playing style and physical demands required in League One football.

Despite the uncertainty, Barnsley’s latest decision indicates that the club still believes the midfielder can contribute positively to the squad moving forward. Sources close to the club suggest internal discussions were held regarding the player’s future before the final decision was reached to keep him for another season.

The retention of Nwakali may also provide the midfielder with an opportunity to revive his career and prove himself once again in English football after enduring several difficult periods in recent years.

Nwakali remains one of the most recognisable names from Nigeria’s famous Golden Eaglets team that won the 2015 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Chile. The midfielder captained the side to victory and was named the tournament’s best player after delivering a series of outstanding performances throughout the competition.

His success at youth level attracted widespread attention from top European clubs before Arsenal secured his signature shortly after the tournament. Many football experts predicted that the Nigerian youngster would develop into one of Africa’s leading midfielders.

Unfortunately, his journey in European football has not progressed as smoothly as many anticipated. Work permit complications prevented him from breaking into Arsenal’s first team, forcing him to spend several years on loan across different European leagues.

Nwakali featured for Dutch clubs MVV Maastricht and VVV Venlo before later moving to FC Porto B in Portugal. He also spent time in Spain with SD Huesca, Alcorcon and Ponferradina, gaining valuable experience in both La Liga and the Spanish second division.

Although his talent has never been questioned, inconsistency and off field challenges have occasionally slowed his progress at club level.

Despite those difficulties, many Nigerian football supporters still believe the midfielder possesses the qualities needed to rebuild his career and become an important player again. At 27, Nwakali remains within his prime football years and could still make a strong impact if he finds consistency and stability.

His situation will also be closely monitored by followers of the Nigerian national team, especially with competition for places in the Super Eagles midfield continuing to increase ahead of upcoming international tournaments and qualification matches.

Barnsley supporters will now hope the midfielder can put recent challenges behind him and rediscover the form that once made him one of the brightest young talents in world football.

As the club prepares for the new season, Nwakali faces another important chapter in his career, one that could determine whether he finally fulfils the enormous promise he showed during his early rise to prominence in Nigerian football.
