Bayelsa Governor, Duoye Diri don and over to him Deputy, go on leave

A Nigerian governor, Douye Diri, has dismissed 27 of his political aides following their attendance at the inauguration of the Bayelsa chapter of The NEW Associates, a grassroots-based political movement, and a mega rally in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Minister Nyesom Wike.

In a letter dated April 23, 2025, and signed by Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, the appointments were terminated with immediate effect.

However, the Bayelsa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the governor’s decision, describing it as “an alarming demonstration of intolerance and high-handedness” that contradicts the democratic ideals the party upholds.

The PDP expressed dismay at the action, noting that the affected aides had worked diligently to ensure the party’s success in the last gubernatorial elections, which led to Governor Diri’s re-election.

The party criticized the governor’s misuse of public power, reminding him that the state government and treasury are public trusts, not personal possessions.

The PDP urged Governor Diri to reverse the decision, promote inclusivity, open dialogue, and tolerance, and work towards building a more inclusive and democratic political environment in Bayelsa State and across Nigeria.
