Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom.

Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday April 23, 2025, cancelled his 64th birthday celebration due to rising insecurity.

Ortom’s media aide, Terver Akase, disclosed this in a statement issued in Makurdi.

Ortom turned 64 on April 23, but refused to mark the day with festivities.

He said the decision was in honour of the many lives lost to attacks in various parts of the state.

The former governor said the ongoing killings in Benue made celebrations inappropriate at this time.

Ortom expressed gratitude to the people of Benue and Nigerians for their birthday messages and prayers.

He said the goodwill messages were overwhelming and deeply appreciated.

But he added that the security situation in Benue required sober reflection and compassion.

“In light of intensified attacks by Fulani terrorists across Benue communities, I have cancelled all forms of celebration,” he said.

The former governor stated that he stood in solidarity with the victims and their grieving families.

He described the killings as senseless and inhumane, urging security agencies to rise to the challenge.

Ortom called on Benue people to pray for divine intervention and lasting peace in the state.

He urged Nigerians to intercede for the safety of communities facing violence nationwide.

He also asked for prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Ortom included Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, in his prayer requests.

He said Nigeria’s leaders need divine wisdom and strength to confront insecurity.

The former governor praised God for preserving him through the years.

He pledged to continue speaking up for justice and the oppressed.

The former governor described leadership as a sacred responsibility to protect lives and promote unity.

He said his heart remains with families mourning their loved ones across Benue.

Ortom called for urgent action to end the killings and restore hope in the state.
