Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, who was abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State two weeks ago, has died while in captivity.
The former military officer was kidnapped around the Matazu area of Katsina State while travelling with his wife to attend a wedding ceremony.
His death was confirmed on Saturday by the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, who described the development as a tragic loss to both the state and the nation.
Before news of his death emerged, Rabe had appeared in a video released by his captors. In the footage, the kidnappers demanded the release of three individuals identified as Sani, Aminu and Nasiru, as well as the return of livestock allegedly seized from them.
The retired general’s wife, who also appeared in the video, appealed to the Katsina State Government and leaders across five local government areas to help facilitate the release of the detained individuals in exchange for their freedom.
Rabe, speaking briefly in the recording, called for peace and dialogue, saying his captors had expressed a willingness to engage in peaceful discussions.
Announcing his death, Mu’azu said the retired general died from health complications while being held by the bandits.
“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” the commissioner said.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the state government and security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.”
According to the commissioner, the late general suffered from diabetes and hypertension, which reportedly led to his death in captivity.
Mu’azu described the incident as a major loss, not only to the family of the deceased but also to Katsina State and Nigeria as a whole
He added that Governor Dikko Umaru Radda had extended his condolences to the family and described the incident as a dark moment that underscores the need for intensified efforts against insecurity.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the soul of the departed retired Major General rest in peace,” the statement added.
As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear whether the late general’s wife has regained her freedom or is still being held by the kidnappers.
