Ismail Haniyeh, the top political leader of Hamas, has been reportedly assassinated in Tehran, Iran.

According to Iranian state-funded Press TV, Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed in an attack on their residence in Tehran, Iran’s capital.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iranian president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the news in the early hours of Wednesday, July 31.

Hamas has confirmed Haniyeh’s death, attributing it to “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.”

The group has mourned his death, remembering him as “a key figure in their international diplomacy efforts.”

This tragic event comes after Haniyeh suffered a devastating personal loss when three of his sons and four grandchildren were killed in an Israeli airstrike on April 10.

About Haniyeh

Ismail Haniyeh was a Palestinian politician and the leader of the Hamas Political Bureau.

He was born on January 29, 1963, in the Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip.

Haniyeh became involved in politics at a young age and was a key figure in the founding of Hamas in the late 1980s.

He quickly rose through the ranks and became a close advisor to Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

After Yassin’s assassination in 2004, Haniyeh took on a more prominent role in the organization and was elected as the head of the Hamas Political Bureau in 2017.

Haniyeh was a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights and has been involved in various negotiations with international leaders.

He was also been a strong critic of Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip and has called for an end to the Israeli occupation.
