NEWARK, UNITED STATES – An international United Airlines flight bound for Spain was forced to return to its departure airport on Saturday night after a passenger’s Bluetooth device name triggered a security alert mid-flight.

The incident occurred on United Airlines Flight 236 from Newark Liberty International Airport to Palma de Mallorca, which departed at around 6:00pm but was diverted back roughly three and a half hours later after concerns were raised over a suspicious device detected onboard.

According to reports, the alert was triggered when a passenger’s Bluetooth-enabled device appeared under the name “bomb” on the aircraft’s internal detection systems, prompting immediate concern among flight crew and security personnel.

Passengers had already been instructed to switch off electronic devices during the flight, but the device reportedly remained active and continued to display the alarming name, leading to fears of a potential security threat.

Upon landing back at Newark Liberty International Airport, the aircraft was met by law enforcement officers, including Port Authority police, who conducted a full security sweep of the plane. Passengers were evacuated as a precaution while additional screening procedures were carried out.

The Transportation Security Administration, Transportation Security Administration, and Customs and Border Protection officials later re-screened all passengers before allowing them to continue their journey.

After investigations, authorities determined that the device in question was a 16-year-old passenger’s Fitbit smartwatch, which had been mistakenly labelled “bomb” as a Bluetooth name.

Despite the discovery, the disruption caused significant delays, with passengers required to disembark, undergo additional security checks, and later re-board the aircraft with a new crew.

A United Airlines spokesperson confirmed the diversion, stating that the flight returned to Newark “to address a potential security concern” before continuing onward to Spain after the situation was resolved.

United Airlines, United Airlines, later resumed the journey with a replacement crew after clearance was granted by security officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reportedly been notified and is reviewing the incident, although no charges have been filed against the teenage passenger at this stage.

The disruption highlights how modern aviation security systems can be triggered by digital device identifiers, even when no malicious intent is involved, leading to significant operational delays and heightened precautionary responses.

Authorities have not confirmed whether any penalties will follow, but officials emphasized that all potential threats must be thoroughly investigated in line with aviation safety protocols.

The flight eventually continued to its destination after several hours of delay, with passengers resuming travel following the extensive security checks.
