ABUJA, NIGERIA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed security agencies to strengthen protection measures around schools located in high-risk areas across the country, as part of renewed efforts to safeguard students and curb rising cases of abduction and attacks on educational institutions.
The directive was issued in commemoration of Children’s Day, with the President emphasizing the need to ensure that Nigerian children can access education in safe and secure environments without fear of violence or disruption.
The President, Bola Tinubu, also ordered intensified rescue operations aimed at securing the release of abducted schoolchildren still in captivity in various parts of the country, stressing that the protection of children remains a top national priority.
Security Concerns Over School Attacks
The Federal Government expressed concern over continued threats targeting schools, particularly in regions that have experienced repeated incidents of kidnapping and armed attacks.
Authorities noted that these attacks have created fear among parents and disrupted academic activities, especially in rural communities where security presence is limited.
The President warned that no society can achieve meaningful development when its children are forced to learn under fear or when schools become targets of violence.
Strengthening School Protection Measures
Tinubu directed security agencies to enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering, and rapid response operations around vulnerable schools, particularly those in remote or high-risk areas.
He also called for improved coordination among the military, police, and other security formations to ensure swift intervention in cases of threats or attacks on educational facilities.
As part of broader reforms, the administration is intensifying implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative, aimed at reinforcing physical infrastructure, emergency response systems, and community-based protection strategies for learning environments.
Focus On Child Safety And Education
The President emphasized that the safety of children is directly linked to the future of the nation, noting that education cannot thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity and fear.
He urged state governments, local authorities, and community leaders to actively support federal efforts by providing timely intelligence and participating in local security arrangements around schools.
Tinubu also reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring that every Nigerian child has uninterrupted access to quality education in a safe environment.
National And Community Response
Security experts have long warned that repeated attacks on schools could have long-term consequences, including reduced school enrollment, increased dropout rates, and psychological trauma among students and families.
They also noted that collaborative efforts between federal and state authorities, alongside community participation, are essential in effectively addressing insecurity affecting schools.
Looking Ahead
The Federal Government assured Nigerians that ongoing security reforms will prioritize the protection of vulnerable communities, particularly school environments, as part of wider national security strategies.
President Tinubu expressed optimism that with strengthened security operations and sustained cooperation across all levels, Nigeria will overcome current challenges and restore confidence in the safety of its educational system.
