Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application seeking a stay of the court’s earlier decision revoking his bail.
In a brief ruling delivered on Monday, the judge directed that Sowore remain in custody until the court determines his motion challenging the revocation of his bail and the bench warrant issued for his arrest.
The court also dismissed an application filed by Sowore seeking Justice Umar’s withdrawal from the case over allegations of bias.
Following the ruling, the judge adjourned proceedings until June 24 to hear arguments on the application for a stay of execution of the bail revocation order.
Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), filed the application shortly after taking over his defence.
The court had on June 16 revoked Sowore’s bail after he failed to appear for trial and subsequently issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting the former presidential candidate over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as a “criminal” in posts published on his X and Facebook accounts.
