Former OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2022 stabbing death of her Nigerian boyfriend, Christian “Toby” Obumseli.
Clenney, who had previously faced a second-degree murder charge, accepted a plea agreement in a Miami courtroom on Monday. Under the deal, she will serve six years behind bars followed by five years of probation.
As part of the sentence, Clenney will also be required to undergo mental-health and substance-abuse evaluations and treatment after her release. She has additionally been barred from financially benefiting from the case.
Obumseli was fatally stabbed inside the couple’s Miami apartment in April 2022. Clenney was arrested several days later in Hawaii and charged with second-degree murder.
Throughout the case, Clenney maintained that she acted in self-defense, alleging that Obumseli had been abusive. Her defense team argued that she threw a knife during an altercation because she believed she needed to protect herself.
Her attorney, Frank Prieto, previously defended her account, arguing that the evidence supported her claim of self-defense and that her actions were necessary to protect her life.
However, an attorney representing Obumseli’s family strongly disputed that explanation. Larry Handfield questioned the circumstances surrounding the stabbing and argued that Clenney’s account was inconsistent with the physical evidence.
The case attracted widespread attention during the years it remained in court, with prosecutors and defense attorneys presenting evidence about the couple’s turbulent relationship. Video footage of an earlier confrontation between the pair was also shown in court, while other evidence released following Clenney’s arrest further fueled public interest in the case.
The plea agreement was announced at the end of July as the case moved closer to trial. By pleading guilty to manslaughter, Clenney avoided proceeding to trial on the more serious second-degree murder charge.
Following the agreement, an attorney for Obumseli’s family described the guilty plea and acceptance of responsibility as an important step toward closure for the family.
The case has remained particularly significant to Obumseli’s relatives and the Nigerian community, who have followed the legal proceedings since his death in 2022.
Obumseli, who was in his 20s when he died, was a Nigerian-born cryptocurrency trader living in the United States. His death became the subject of intense public scrutiny, particularly because of the conflicting accounts surrounding the circumstances of the stabbing.
Clenney’s plea formally brings the criminal case toward its conclusion, although the emotional impact of Obumseli’s death continues to be felt by his family and loved ones.
Under the sentence, Clenney will spend six years in prison before beginning a five-year period of probation, with additional requirements concerning mental-health and substance-abuse treatment.
For the Obumseli family, the guilty plea represents a significant development after more than four years of legal proceedings surrounding Christian’s death.
