In a unique and significant way of tackling health challenges in society, Dr Otemu Olotu Akpodiete Ph.D (JP) held a memorial lecture on the essence and benefits of health insurance in Nigeria.

According to Diaspora digital media DDM, the event was in honour of his late grandfather, Late Chief Ekuogbe Rowland Akpodiete Ph.D.

Dr Akpodiete is the Executive Director of Olotu & Ekuogbe Rowland Akpodiete Foundation (OERAF) and a passionate health insurance ambassador (HIA).

Speaking during the event held at both Okparabe and Otor-Udu yesterday, he noted that health insurance is very important to every family in the society.

Akpodiete explained that sometimes emergencies arise, and without health insurance, one may spend a lot before getting medical attention.

He added that with a health insurance card, access to care becomes easier and less stressful.

He commended the Delta State government led by His Excellency, Rt Hon (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori for introducing the initiative.

He emphasized that the Delta State scheme is affordable—only seven thousand naira is required for enrollment.

He compared it to the federal government’s program, which costs almost forty thousand naira per person.

The Director General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission, Olorogun Dr Isaac Akpoveta, was ably represented by Mr Emmanuel Akpofure.

Mr Akpofure thanked Dr Akpodiete for sponsoring the registration of indigents into the scheme.

He praised him for being the first person in Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency to do so.

He called on other wealthy individuals to emulate Dr Akpodiete’s example.

Several beneficiaries also commended Dr Akpodiete for his kind gesture.

They noted that enrolling over 400 persons in the program is no small feat.

Each registration costs seven thousand naira, and yet Dr Akpodiete undertook the responsibility.

They acknowledged that he is not the wealthiest but is rich in compassion and humanity.

They prayed for God to grant him his heart’s desires.

A major highlight of the event was the presentation of a Health Insurance Ambassador (HIA) award to Dr Akpodiete.
