Operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) have arrested leaders of the ongoing hunger protests in Katsina State.
According to sources, Kabir Yandaki and Habibu Ruma, leading figures of the demonstration, were invited to the DSS office in Katsina and subsequently detained.
Also, Mujittapha Usman, who led a protest in Malumfashi local government area according to Vanguard was also taken into custody by security operatives.
Friends of the detainees, who shared the incident with newsmen, revealed that the DSS had contacted Yandaki and Ruma earlier in the morning, requesting their presence at the office of the secret police for inquiries regarding the previous day’s protest.
However, upon their arrival, they were detained and remain in custody.
It was earlier reported that the peaceful protest turned chaotic when some unscrupulous elements, including many minors, took to the streets of the state capital.
They were wielding sticks and leafs, chanting “Bamuyi Bamuyi” while destroying public property.
During the unrest, a patrol vehicle of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was set on fire, and the All Progressive Congress office in Dutsinma LGA was torched.
In response to the unrest, the Katsina State Government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Dutsinma local government area.
