KANO, Nigeria — The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has revealed that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is currently facing stringent bail conditions while in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, June 18, 2026, Sanusi stated that the conditions attached to El-Rufai’s bail are demanding and require guarantees from highly placed individuals before his release can be considered. He explained that among the requirements reportedly set for the former governor’s release is the endorsement of both an emir and a senior government official, describing the process as unusually strict given the circumstances of the case.
“For example, take a look at what’s going on with my brother, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, that he is currently in custody and the conditions for his release are very tough,” the Emir said. “They said that both an emir and a high-ranking government official need to sign his bail.”
El-Rufai has remained in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, with ongoing legal proceedings linked to an amended nine-count charge bordering on alleged fraud and abuse of office. The anti-graft agency had, on April 13, 2026, arraigned the former governor before a Kaduna High Court on the charges.
The case has attracted significant public and political attention, given El-Rufai’s prominence as a former governor and his role in national politics. The ICPC has not publicly commented on the specific bail conditions, but sources indicate that the commission is proceeding with its investigation and prosecution of the case.
Sanusi’s comments come amid ongoing legal proceedings involving the former Kaduna governor. The Emir, who has maintained a relationship with El-Rufai despite their political differences, expressed concern over the stringent conditions, suggesting that they may be excessive given the nature of the allegations.
Legal experts have noted that bail conditions in corruption cases are often stringent, particularly when the accused is considered a flight risk or when the alleged offences involve significant amounts of money. However, they have also called for a balance between ensuring the accused’s availability for trial and respecting their right to liberty.
El-Rufai’s legal team has not issued an official statement on the bail conditions. However, sources close to the former governor have indicated that efforts are underway to meet the requirements for his release.
The case continues to unfold as the ICPC pursues its investigation and prosecution. For now, El-Rufai remains in custody, awaiting the fulfilment of the bail conditions that have drawn the attention of political observers and the public alike.
