Theft Uncovered: Trio Arrested in Abuja Gold Robbery

Esther, a 32-year-old woman, is currently fighting for her life at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a tragic incident on December 29, 2024, at Jabi Motor Park.

She was allegedly set ablaze by her lover, Saheed Ganiyu, a 47-year-old vulcaniser, following a heated argument.

The suspect reportedly poured petrol on Esther and ignited her, leaving her with severe burns.

Ganiyu was arrested by the police at the scene after being rescued from an angry mob attempting to lynch him.

He is now in custody at the Utako Division of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

Witnesses stated that the couple had been arguing when Ganiyu doused Esther with petrol and used a lighter to set her on fire.

The incident shocked onlookers, who described it as a horrific act of violence.

Both Esther and Ganiyu were initially taken to the hospital, but while the suspect has been discharged to face trial, Esther remains in critical condition, undergoing intensive treatment for her injuries.

The police are continuing their investigation, and the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured the public that Ganiyu will be arraigned in court soon.

In his defense, Ganiyu, who is originally from Ibadan, Oyo State, claimed the act was unintentional.

During an interview with Diaspora digital media (DDM), he expressed remorse and a willingness to marry Esther despite the incident.

Ganiyu recounted the events leading up to the tragedy, stating that Esther had told him she was going to church earlier that day.

He gave her money for offering and food, expecting her to return after the service.

However, when she didn’t, Ganiyu said he became worried and began looking for her.

According to him, he eventually found Esther at a local gin (ogogoro) spot, drinking, contrary to her earlier promises to change her ways.

Ganiyu claimed he had bought clothes worth N30,000 for her ahead of the New Year and felt hurt by her actions.

Despite his attempts to persuade her to leave the drinking spot, he said she refused.

Later, he asked her to help him buy petrol for his work, but she declined.

Frustrated, Ganiyu went to buy the petrol himself.

On his way back, Ganiyu said he saw Esther drinking again.

As he approached her, a confrontation ensued, during which the petrol bottle he was carrying spilled on her.

He alleged that while he was smoking a cigarette, Esther tried to grab it from him, and in the struggle, the flames ignited her petrol-soaked clothes.

Ganiyu insisted he had no intention of harming Esther and blamed the incident on an unfortunate sequence of events.

Ganiyu described Esther as a supportive partner who often helped him set up his vulcanising machine in the mornings.

He expressed his love for her, stating that he was willing to marry her despite the tragic turn of events.

However, he also admitted feeling shattered by the incident and the beating he received from the mob before being rescued by the police.

Esther’s uncle, Mr. Modaki Kofur, a retired Warrant Officer of the Nigerian Army, provided more insight into her life.

He revealed that Esther had a hip deformity caused by a fall during Nigerian Navy recruitment training 12 years ago.

The injury left her with a broken hip bone and limited mobility.

According to Mr. Kofur, Esther had left his home over two years ago, and he believed she was working in Enugu State until he learned about the incident.

When Mr. Kofur visited Esther at the hospital, he was devastated by her condition.

He explained that her medical bills had become overwhelming, and she would likely need to remain in the hospital for at least two months.

The family has been appealing for financial assistance to cover her treatment expenses.

Mr. Kofur also criticized Ganiyu for not contributing enough to Esther’s care, despite being the cause of her injuries.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning the act as a brutal example of domestic violence.

Activists and community leaders have called for justice for Esther and emphasized the need for stricter laws to protect victims of intimate partner violence.

Meanwhile, Esther continues to fight for her life, with her family and well-wishers hoping for her recovery.

As the investigation unfolds, the tragic story of Esther highlights the dangers of toxic relationships and the need for early intervention in cases of domestic disputes.

Esther’s plight has become a rallying point for advocacy against gender-based violence, with many calling for greater awareness and support for victims.

The police have urged the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.

Commissioner Olatunji Disu reiterated the commitment of the FCT Police Command to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of the case.
