Awka Flood Tragedy: Missing UNIZIK Pupil Found Dead After 24-Hour Search

A heartbreaking tragedy has struck Awka, Anambra State, after the body of Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of UNIZIK Primary School, was recovered following a devastating flood incident along the Nibo–Isiagu Road.

Success was among pupils and adults trapped inside a school shuttle bus after heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to rise rapidly around the road. While seven schoolchildren and two adults were rescued, Success remained missing, triggering an urgent search that continued into Wednesday.

Awka South Local Government Chairman, Prince Chinedu Okafor, confirmed that the missing pupil’s body had been recovered. He also said the rescued children were stable and receiving medical attention at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.

According to a family member, Success was remembered as a brave boy who reportedly broke one of the vehicle's windows, creating an escape route that helped other occupants get out. Tragically, he could not make it to safety himself.

The circumstances surrounding his final moments have added another layer of heartbreak. His father reportedly recalled that Success kissed him on both cheeks before leaving home that morning to board the school shuttle — a journey from which he would never return.

Two other children from the same family were among those rescued.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by rapidly rising floodwaters during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly around roads and communities affected by poor drainage and flooding.

The Anambra State Police Command's Safe School Operatives, alongside community members, participated in the rescue operation and subsequent search for the missing pupil.

As the Ezenwafor family mourns the loss of young Success, thoughts and prayers remain with his loved ones during this painful period.

Another heartbreaking schoolchildren scare has been reported in Imo State, just hours after a similar incident involving schoolchildren in Anambra State.

Schoolchildren were reportedly trapped at Acha River in Umueze Ezimba Autonomous Community, Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State, while returning from school. The incident was linked to the poor condition of the bridge, leaving the children struggling to cross as floodwaters overwhelmed their route home.

The development has raised fresh concerns about the safety of children who depend on poorly maintained bridges and roads to get to and from school. 9 Rescued, 1 Child Missing As Floodwaters Trap School Bus In Anambra

A school journey turned into a frightening rescue operation in Anambra State after floodwaters trapped a school bus along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22, 2026.

The bus was carrying schoolchildren and adults when heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to rapidly rise and overwhelm the road. The vehicle became stranded in deep water, leaving those inside in a dangerous situation.

Police operatives and members of the local community responded to the emergency and succeeded in rescuing nine people — seven schoolchildren and two adults. However, one schoolchild remains missing, with search-and-rescue efforts continuing to locate the child.

Eyewitness footage circulating online showed the school bus surrounded by floodwater, while a truck driver reportedly attempted to reach the stranded children but was unable to get close because of the depth and force of the water.

Following the distress call, the Anambra State Police Command mobilised its Safe School Operatives to assist with the rescue. The Commissioner of Police directed that the search operation should continue and be expanded until the missing child is found.
