ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has endorsed the Abuja Cooperative City Project, a major housing initiative aimed at delivering 10,000 affordable homes for federal workers and cooperative members under the Renewed Hope Affordable Housing Agenda.

The project, located on a 700-hectare site in Jibi Town along the Kubwa Expressway, will feature a mix of one- to five-bedroom homes, energy-efficient designs, landscaped green areas, schools, markets, health centers, and a clean-energy bus service.

The development has received support from the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. Participating cooperatives include the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, NNPC, the Police Service Commission, and the Federal Judicial Service Commission, each of which has pledged to mobilise members to subscribe once mortgage application forms are released.

Emmanuel Iyaji, Secretary General of the Abuja Cooperative Federation, said the project represents a long-awaited opportunity for federal workers to own homes in the capital. “Abuja Cooperative City changes that story. It is exciting to watch government agencies, cooperatives and private partners working side by side to give ordinary working people a chance to own a safe, comfortable home and a place they can truly call their own,” he said.

The project is part of a broader federal housing push. Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, recently disclosed that the government has commenced over 10,000 housing units in 17 states and the FCT, attracting over ₦70 billion in private capital through Public-Private Partnerships and creating more than 250,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The Renewed Hope Housing Programme is categorised into three components: Renewed Hope Cities (1,000-unit urban projects), Renewed Hope Estates (250-unit estates in each state), and Renewed Hope Social Housing Estates (100 units in each of the 774 local government areas for low-income and vulnerable groups).

The Federal Housing Authority is also targeting 10,000 new homes in the FCT by 2027 through deeper partnerships with private developers. The agency is leveraging government-backed financing through MOFI and the National Housing Fund, enabling Nigerians to access loans of up to N100 million at single-digit interest rates for up to 20 years.

Additionally, the Federal Housing Authority has partnered with a diaspora investment fund to deliver 10,000 affordable homes across Nigeria, with the first 2,000 units expected by Q3 2026.

Housing experts have welcomed the initiatives but cautioned that execution and affordability remain key challenges, warning that similar projects have faltered in the past due to poor funding and political interference.
