ABUJA, Nigeria — The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated its National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) to strengthen coordination, preparedness and response efforts for the 2026 flood season across Nigeria as authorities intensify measures to reduce the impact of flooding on lives and property.
The activation of the operations centre is part of the Federal Government’s disaster management strategy aimed at ensuring timely response to flood emergencies across vulnerable communities. NEMA said the centre will coordinate the activities of emergency responders, monitor developments nationwide and facilitate rapid deployment of personnel and relief materials whenever disasters occur.
According to the agency, the National Emergency Operations Centre will serve as a central platform for gathering information from relevant government institutions, security agencies, state emergency management agencies and humanitarian partners throughout the flood season. The objective is to improve communication, enhance coordination and ensure that emergency interventions are carried out promptly.
NEMA explained that the decision follows forecasts indicating that several parts of the country could experience varying levels of flooding due to heavy rainfall, overflowing rivers and poor drainage systems. The agency stressed that proactive planning remains essential to minimising the humanitarian and economic consequences of seasonal flooding.
Officials stated that the operations centre will coordinate rescue missions, evacuation exercises, damage assessments and the distribution of relief materials to affected communities where necessary. It will also monitor weather reports and flood warnings to support informed decision-making and ensure that emergency resources are deployed efficiently.
The agency appealed to state governments, local authorities and residents in flood-prone communities to comply with early warning advisories and take preventive measures before flooding occurs. It urged residents to clear blocked drainage channels, avoid dumping refuse into waterways and relocate from areas identified as highly vulnerable whenever necessary.
NEMA also advised people living along riverbanks and other flood-risk locations to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season and cooperate fully with emergency officials if evacuation becomes necessary. According to the agency, early evacuation remains one of the most effective ways of reducing casualties and preventing avoidable losses during major flood incidents.
Disaster management experts have continued to warn that climate change, rapid urban development and inadequate drainage infrastructure are contributing to the increasing frequency and severity of flooding in many parts of Nigeria. They emphasised that long-term investment in flood control infrastructure, environmental protection and public awareness campaigns remains critical to reducing future risks.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, state emergency management agencies, security organisations and humanitarian partners to ensure an effective nationwide response throughout the flood season.
NEMA further encouraged Nigerians to promptly report flooding incidents and other emergencies through the appropriate authorities to enable quick intervention by rescue teams. It assured citizens that emergency personnel remain on standby across the country to respond to disasters and provide assistance wherever required.
