France Reacts in Anger After Trump Mocked Macron and His Wife

Anger has erupted in France after US President Donald Trump mocked French President Emmanuel Macron and made remarks about his wife during a private lunch.

Trump reportedly imitated a French accent and claimed that Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly,” comments that quickly drew criticism from French politicians and public figures.

His remarks came as he criticised NATO allies for not doing enough to support the ongoing war against Iran, further escalating tensions with European partners.

In France, several lawmakers condemned the comments. Yael Braun-Pivet, president of the National Assembly, said the remarks were inappropriate at a time when global leaders should be focused on serious issues, including the conflict in Iran.

Even political opponents of Macron defended him. Manuel Bompard of the France Unbowed party described Trump’s comments as “completely unacceptable,” especially the remarks directed at Macron’s wife.

French media also weighed in, with Le Figaro describing Trump’s outburst as another controversial episode.

Trump also referenced a video that appeared to show a light altercation between Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, which had previously been dismissed by the French president as misleading.

The former US president went on to criticise NATO, calling the alliance a “paper tiger” and questioning its reliability in future conflicts. He also suggested that the United States may reassess its relationship with the alliance once the situation with Iran stabilises.

The comments have added to ongoing tensions between Washington and European allies amid broader geopolitical concerns.
