The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) will meet today, Monday, to deliberate on the ongoing leadership crisis at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the meeting will not focus on reinstating Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker.

A GAC member, speaking confidentially with the Nigerian Tribune, refuted claims that President Bola Tinubu had ordered Obasa’s reinstatement.

He dismissed such reports as misleading, attributing them to speculation and exaggeration by the media and Obasa’s loyalists.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has been mired in controversy since January 13, when lawmakers removed Obasa from his position as Speaker.

Following his ousting, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was sworn in as the new Speaker of the 10th Assembly.

Obasa’s removal has since caused divisions within the party, with different factions pushing conflicting narratives regarding his possible return.

While some reports suggested that President Tinubu had intervened to restore him, a senior GAC member insisted that there was no such directive from the president.

The source stated, “We are meeting today to discuss the Lagos State House of Assembly crisis, not Obasa.”

“If you recall, the GAC sent a delegation, including members of the council and the Assembly leadership, to meet with President Tinubu.”

“At that meeting, the issue was discussed, and possible solutions were suggested.”

He added, “The claim that the president has ordered Obasa’s return is baseless.”

“His loyalists are behind this falsehood.”

“Obasa was the first Speaker in Lagos Assembly history to be removed by his colleagues, and there is no precedent for his reinstatement.”

“President Tinubu is a committed democrat and would not impose such a decision.”

He further challenged anyone advocating for Obasa’s return, stating, “Have you seen any sincere party leader, GAC member, or politician genuinely pushing for his reinstatement?”

“Those doing so are not being honest.”

The struggle over the speakership has also exposed rifts among GAC members, with divisions emerging between the Justice Forum (JF) and the Mandate Movement (MM).

While Obasa, a prominent MM member, enjoys the backing of his camp within the GAC, the Justice Forum strongly opposes his return.

However, the GAC source downplayed these reported divisions, asserting that the leadership tussle was an internal Assembly matter rather than a factional battle within the APC.

“The crisis has nothing to do with the Mandate Movement or the Justice Forum.”

“It is strictly an Assembly affair.”

“The true leaders of our party, those who have stood by Tinubu since 1999, are not involved in this debate,” he explained.

According to him, some GAC members advocating for Obasa’s return are individuals with inconsistent political allegiances.

He stated, “Many of those making noise about Obasa’s reinstatement are people who have switched parties multiple times before returning to the progressives.”

“This is not a battle between MM and JF.”

He also emphasized that Lagos has a strong political structure under Tinubu’s leadership, dismissing claims that the president’s national focus has weakened his grip on Lagos politics.

“We are privileged to have Tinubu as our political leader.”

“Just because he is focused on national governance does not mean he has lost control of Lagos.”

“He will not allow instability in the state’s political space,” he said.

The source reiterated that today’s GAC meeting would center on addressing the broader issues at the Lagos Assembly, not Obasa’s return.

He remarked, “People are exaggerating Obasa’s importance.”

“Lagos has seen Speakers removed before.”

“Barrister Osinowo, the first Lagos Assembly Speaker during the Jakande era, was removed.”

“Why should Obasa’s case be any different?”

Addressing conspiracy theories that Obasa possesses sensitive information about Tinubu, he dismissed such speculations.

“What does he know that former governors and past Speakers didn’t?”

“There is nothing new about Tinubu that only Obasa knows.”

“His importance is being overhyped, and this is fueling falsehoods in the media,” he concluded.

The GAC’s position remains firm—today’s meeting is about resolving the Assembly’s crisis, not bringing back Obasa.
