Hamza Al-Mustapha speaks on efforts to unite and revitalize the North
DDM News

Hamza Al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha, has shared his thoughts on efforts to unify and revitalize the North of Nigeria.
Speaking at an event organized by the Rebuild AREWA Initiative for Development (RAI4D) in Kaduna, Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that Al-Mustapha emphasized that the region must take proactive steps to restore its strength and unity.
The event was held in memory of Sardauna Ahmadu Bello, the first Premier of Northern Nigeria, and provided a platform for discussions on the challenges facing the North.
In his address, Al-Mustapha stressed that the North could no longer afford to remain passive while it suffers from decay.
He argued that it is better to make necessary but difficult decisions now, even if they cause some discomfort, to set the region on the right path.
According to him, the unity and progress of the North are essential for the overall well-being of the entire country.
He highlighted that addressing the North’s problems would ultimately benefit all of Nigeria.
One of the key points Al-Mustapha raised was the current weakness of institutions in the 19 Northern states.
Many of these institutions are either underdeveloped or non-existent, creating significant gaps that contribute to the region’s social and economic challenges.
Al-Mustapha pointed out that these gaps are a primary factor behind the increasing crime rate and other social ills affecting the North.
He described the rise in criminal activity as a “capital shame” and called for urgent reform to correct the situation.
Rather than remaining complacent, Al-Mustapha urged processes of healing within the North.
He emphasized that this healing would not be easy and may require tough decisions that could challenge both old and young leaders in the region.
However, he argued that such steps were necessary for the North to regain its strength and for Nigeria to benefit from a united and prosperous North.
Al-Mustapha expressed his commitment to being an active part of this healing process, even if it meant facing criticism from different segments of leadership.
The former security chief also expressed frustration with the current leadership in the North, which he believes lacks direction and fails to prioritize the welfare of the people.
He lamented the plight of the common man in the North, pointing out that many of the region’s problems stem from leadership that is disconnected from the needs of the people.
Al-Mustapha’s statements reflect a deep concern for the future of the North and its people, and his desire to see the region thrive once again.
Finally, Al-Mustapha took a moment to reflect on the events of January 15, 1966, which had a profound impact on the political landscape of Nigeria.
He expressed sympathy for the tragic events of that day and acknowledged their lasting effect on the people of the North and the entire nation.
Al-Mustapha’s vision for the North is one of unity, strength, and progress, and he remains committed to working towards a brighter future for the region and Nigeria as a whole.
