Hardship: Patients dey waka go Neuropsychiatric hospitals as Naija dey fight depression

As Naija dey face wahala wey dey make economy worse, pipo dey raise alarm about how e dey affect di mental well-being, wit anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts don dey increase for di country.

According to report, di World Health Organization (WHO), about 40 million Naija, or 20 per cent of di population, dey affected by mental illnesses, wit conditions wey range from anxiety and depression to more serious disorders.

As food, transport, and healthcare dey cost plenty, di economic crisis don seriously reduce di things wey many pipo fit buy.

Millions of pipo dey struggle to meet daily needs and di mata dey cause mental health wahala.

For di Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital for Yaba, Lagos, na e di Medical Director Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye come dey report say mental health cases don increase well-well.

“Before, di hospital dey receive five to ten patients every day; now dis one don dey increase to about 25 to 30 patients, wey mean say e don increase over 200 per cent,” na so him talk.

Him add say di facility dey see around 750 new cases every month, wey show say mental health resources dey under plenty pressure.

“Di crisis no stop for di hospital, e don enta homes and communities, wia plenty pipo, like Mr. Chike, wey be papa of three, dey face plenty pressure to meet basic needs.”

Him talk: “Every day na struggle to survive.”

“We no fit put food for di table, nor meet transport cost; medical cost don turn to serious source of stress.”

“Same way, Mrs. Grace, wey be tailor, dey skip meal to make sure say her children dey chop.”

“Every day dey feel like battle,” she talk, dey show di tiredness from constant anxiety about how to provide for her family.”

Di rising prices, currency wey don lose value, and inflation wey dey at record level dey force Naija enta cycle of despair wey dey affect not only individual mental health but also family dynamics and social relationships.

Psychologist Mr. Richard Adebayo explain, “Wen pipo dey worry about how to feed dia family or afford basic needs, mental health go just dey at di back of dia mind.”

Psychologist Mrs. Aisha Bubah, wey be Executive Director of Sunshine Series, talk say untreated mental illness, wey include depression and schizophrenia, dey worse bicos of di economic downturn.

“Wen economic hardship dey, plenty pipo dey struggle to make ends meet, e dey create sense of hopelessness and, for some cases, thoughts of suicide.”

“Things fit dey too much, but e dey important to talk to pesin wey you trust, wey no go judge you.”

“If you dey bottle your feelings, e go just make your mental health worse,” she talk.

As Naija dey face bad economic condition, citizens dey raise alarm about how e dey affect dia mental well-being, wit anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts dey increase for di whole country.

Di crisis no just dey inside hospital, e don enta homes and communities, wia plenty pipo, parents dey face pressure to meet basic needs.

Every day na struggle to survive as pipo no fit afford food for dia families again.
