Health Experts Encourage Regular Physical Activity to Reduce the Risk of Chronic Diseases

Health experts are encouraging Nigerians to make regular physical activity part of their daily routine, emphasizing that staying active is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall health.

According to medical professionals, physical activity benefits people of all ages by strengthening the heart, muscles, and bones while helping the body function more efficiently. Regular exercise also supports mental well-being, improves energy levels, and contributes to a better quality of life.

Doctors explain that a sedentary lifestyle has become increasingly common due to long hours spent sitting at work, studying, or using electronic devices. They warn that insufficient physical activity can increase the risk of developing conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, certain cancers, and osteoporosis.

Health experts recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, along with muscle-strengthening exercises on two or more days each week. Activities such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, jogging, and recreational sports can all contribute to better health.

Medical professionals note that regular exercise offers benefits beyond disease prevention. It can improve sleep quality, strengthen the immune system, enhance mood, reduce stress, increase flexibility and balance, and lower the risk of falls, particularly among older adults.

Doctors encourage people who are new to exercise to start gradually rather than attempting intense workouts immediately. Even small amounts of daily activity, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking short distances instead of driving, or doing household chores, can make a positive difference when performed consistently.

Experts also advise reducing the amount of time spent sitting. Individuals who work at desks or spend long periods using computers should stand up, stretch, or take short walking breaks every 30 to 60 minutes to improve circulation and reduce the health risks associated with prolonged sitting.

Health professionals stress that exercise should be combined with other healthy lifestyle habits, including eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, getting adequate sleep, avoiding tobacco products, and limiting alcohol consumption. Together, these habits significantly lower the risk of chronic illnesses.

Doctors recommend that individuals with existing medical conditions, those recovering from illness, or adults who have been physically inactive for an extended period consult a healthcare professional before beginning a new exercise programme. A medical evaluation can help determine the safest and most appropriate level of physical activity.

Medical experts conclude that regular physical activity is a powerful tool for preventing disease and promoting long-term health. They encourage Nigerians to find enjoyable forms of exercise and remain consistent, noting that even moderate daily activity can provide lasting health benefits.
